Share this with everyone you know, we don’t need four more years of Bush policies — we can’t afford it.

“Obama in 30 Seconds” is a campaign started by MoveOn.org whereby the entrants created their own political TV ad stating why they’re voting for Barak Obama. After 1100 entries and more than 5.5 million total votes cast, the results are in. From among 15 amazing finalists, a panel of top filmmakers, artists, musicians, and progressive heroes picked the winning ad, “Obamacan.” Over 100,000 people have already seen it online, but we need your help to air “Obamacan” on TV. Can you chip in?

For Democrats and/or Obama/Biden supporters, it’s been a rough couple of days out there in BlogLand. I’m not going to try to kid you into thinking anyone is beyond going too far, especially with the anonymity of the internet – what I have seen from both sides this weekend is a sad testament to civility. But I have noticed a difference in the way we choose to disagree. I have watched how those who lean to the left will begin with a mere opinion. Within moments, there’s a flurry, like a pack of jackals on this person and they are being taken down like a rabbit in the desert and torn to bits. Not for food – for having an opinion. This week I have personally been called: unAmerican, a traitor, anti-troops, stupid, a lemming, an Iraqi bitch, a n***** lover (this one I could not beLIEVE!) and a lesbian. All for having an opinion. Yes, I did refer to one poster as ‘asinine’, which, was hard to dispute, but at no other time did I resort to name-calling and taunting. I’ll bet you can’t guess who is doing the lion’s share of the schoolyard bully routine – oh, yes, it is those sweet, Evangelical, born-again, pro-lifers of the Neo-Con Right that are the very worst offenders. What ever happened to an exchange of ideas? What I find most offensive is their unwillingness to accept any idea or concept foreign to their personal beliefs (which have been spoon-fed to them). I’m sure while they’re calling me names, God is telling them to do it and that makes it okay. Hard to have an open exchange of ideas with someone when ‘God’ is shouting louder in their other ear.
I have consistently been told that I am aiding and abetting the enemy with my dangerous ideas and that people should be afraid of me and my beliefs. It was all beginning to sound so strangely familiar (go figure – I minored in history at my Midwestern Liberal [oops!] Arts College) So I hopped on that information superhighway -suddenly I remembered what was so disturbing about it all. I found this at my favorite urban legend ‘buster’ site called Snopes. And I quote:

But after all, it’s the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it’s always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it’s a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, a Parliament, or a Communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to do the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger. That’s why I believe in free speech. The Right is free to spout off about whatever they want, but I’m getting a little tired of having my patriotism questioned. That’s why I find the Patriot Act so offensive – it calls into question my patriotism and if I am even suspected of subversive activities, the goverment has broadened it’s rights to tap into my e-mail, wiretap my phone, dig into my family medical and financial records, all in the name of halting terrorism, which the government knows full well I’m not a terrorist. And all this in the name of protecting our freedom. Of course, according to the very definition, my pacifism and my opposition to this war is, by its very nature, a terrorist act. The more pervasive problem with the Patriot Act, is that it seems to give the Ditto Heads (and they called me a lemming!) of the extreme right to label me a terrorist for disagreeing with everything out of Rush Limbaugh’s mouth. They fight for good but I’m ‘whining’. They have Fox News (an entire network!) but let one reporter hold the Conservatives accountable, and they should be fired, beaten, stoned or hung and they are labeled the ‘Liberal Media’! Where was the Liberal Media when Clinton was being hung out to dry on the witch hunt that was his administration? Bush lied about WMD in Iraq to start a war and his argument was that he was on a mission from God. The Liberal Media was having a tough time getting hold of The Savior by cell phone. Nobody was being easy on Clinton and all he got was a blow job. It didn’t cost 4000+ young Americans their lives and 100,000+ Iraqi Nationals theirs. I’m understanding the double standard I’m seeing in the campaign from the Republican candidates – it’s permeating through their constituency. Perhaps a few more blowjobs is just what the Right needs – you know, to take the edge off. Maybe they wouldn’t be so prone to attack people who don’t look and think exactly like them.

Only in America can someone rise to meteoric heights with no reasonable experience in economics, foreign or domestic policy, health care, energy, or pretty much anything else and still aspire to be Vice-President of the United States. I suppose all she really needed was a good throwing arm – gotta love a gal who can throw rocks as well as any of the good ol’ boys. The sneer doesn’t hurt much, either. It’s pretty easy to look down your nose at people who’ve come up the hard way, after all, you have to be a pretty smart cookie to leap-frog those pesky interim jobs that would give you practical experience. Time wasters, that’s all they are. If anything, Palin has demonstrated an economy of time. Every time I look at her I have to reach for my copy of The Peter Principle, but then, we have John McCain to thank for that.
I, myself, have been thinking about new career opportunities… hang on, I think I hear the paper boy. What do we have here… “Help Wanted. No Experience Necessary. Governorship of far northern state. Must be able to handle an assault weapon. Some supervisory experience helpful but not necessary, as you have the power to fire anyone who disagrees with you. Hiring of personal friends (school mates or church members) for high level positions o.k. Hockey moms welcome. Religious fanatics preferred. Bi-Lingual not necessary, as you don’t actually have to go to Russia, just be able to see it from the porch. Ability to speak from both sides of your mouth a plus. Must be willing to relocate.”

However, I believe that more than 17 million women have already beaten you to it….
…and McCain’s choice was obvious, but became a smack-you-up-side-the-head kind of obvious when ‘Saracudda’ referenced the ‘glass ceiling’ line during her acceptance speech. As a woman, I actually feel insulted by this. That class ceiling would have been cracked had Hillary had been nominated for either position. To have a woman nominated for President or to have been given a nod for the Vice Presidency would have been a real crack, had it been the right woman. Had it been a woman who got there based on her accomplishments, intelligence, skill and merits. Being selected by a man to win votes simply because you are a woman doesn’t count, and it doesn’t break any kind of ceiling. Choosing a woman because you think her gender will get votes is insulting, and frankly I am insulted, as should the rest of the women in this country be.
I’m so pleased to learn that my personal accomplishments don’t count. So pleased to learn that the position I earned (that has always traditionally been held by men) doesn’t count. I’m even more pleased to learn that the Republican Party thinks so little of women, they believe we would all experience some sort of mass hormonal surge that would have us all panting after Sarah Palin and forget how so many of us have been disenfranchised by the the Republicans.
Barack Obama speaks a different language when it comes to women. He was raised by a single mother who put herself through school. His grandmother was a ‘Rosie the Riveter‘ during WWII and she helped sustain the family financially, though she didn’t have so much as a high school diploma. His wife Michelle was raised in the tough neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side and by all accounts, she is a phenomenal wife and mother. Obama himself admits that, without these three women in his life, he would never have achieved what he has today. As a woman, this humble admission on Obama’s part is exactly what I need to know about this man.
Obama respects women and understands them. McCain clearly intends to use women as a means to an end, that being the Oval Office. My suspicion is that one he gets there, we won’t be so much on the front line of his concerns when it comes to Roe v Wade (MY body, MY right!) or equal pay for equal work. The women of America need to take a much more discriminating look at their choices in a few short weeks and make a decision that makes sense for women and for America. There is only one choice and that is to vote for Barack Obama for President of the United States.
