Alexandria coal plant to close within a year

Friday, September 30th, 2011

The last major stumbling block to closing the Alexandria coal-burning power plant was removed Friday after a regional power organization determined that its operation is not needed to keep the area’s electrical grid reliable. The 62-year-old Potomac River generating plant, once considered the single biggest source of air pollution in the region, is now set to close no later than Oct. 1, 2012, a spokeswoman for owner GenOn confirmed. For Chris Christie, a big opening but challenges await

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Leading Republican strategists say that if he is serious about a presidential race in 2012, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is running out of time to build the kind of national campaign and fundraising organization he will need. But, they added, the tough-talking governor immediately would become a top-tier candidate with a real chance of winning the GOP nomination. Read full article > >

Albrecht Muth’s military background fictionalized, prosecutors say

Friday, September 30th, 2011

A framed certificate hanging on the study wall in the Georgetown home of Albrecht Gero Muth, who is accused of killing his wife in August , announced Muth’s appointment as a brigadier general in the Iraqi army. But in that same home, a receipt from a Maryland print shop was found, and D.C. homicide detectives said Muth ordered the certificate and had it delivered in April. Read full article > >

Critics slammed Ron Suskind’s ‘Confidence Men.’ But how closely did did they read it?

Friday, September 30th, 2011

For a White House often criticized for not communicating a strong and clear message to the public, Team Obama rallied to trash Ron Suskind’s new book , “Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington, and the Education of a President.” In his defense, Suskind has said that the White House knew everything that was in his book before it even hit the printing presses. But that was exactly his problem. White House officials got a head start in attacking, and neither Suskind nor a time-crunched news media were able to catch up. Read full article > >

Rich people are being ‘demonized’ for flaunting their wealth. Poor dears!

Friday, September 30th, 2011

The latest group to claim victim status is the rich. Actually the super-rich, whose wealth ordinarily exempts them from pity. While they are not yet subjected to airport profiling (except for early boarding and club access), they sense that the public is turning subtly against them — otherwise how could President Obama propose raising their taxes ? Richard Feynman, the late physicist, is hero of new graphic novel

Friday, September 30th, 2011

It is a sad fact — an endlessly rehashed symbol of just what is wrong with America — that we make heroes of athletes but not mathletes, that we write comic books about men with capes but not real men with calculators, and that “Dancing With the Stars” has never tapped Andre Geim or Konstantin Novoselov, who — oh, admit it, you had to Google them — were last year’s winners of the Nobel Prize in physics. Amid the sound of mariachis playing dirges and the aroma of Latin American street cuisine, a three-year-old District experiment in business incubation ended with hugs and bitterness in Adams Morgan on Friday afternoon. “I feel very sad, but I say thank you to Pati for her cooking,” Jose Gutierrez said in Spanish, balancing a plate of three tacos in one hand while embracing Patricia Cruz, owner of the food stall El Sabor de Mexico.
