In its short and colorful existence, Occupy Wall Street has garnered reams of media attention, with countless stories focusing on its methods, aims, origins and mostly youthful participants. But one question remains unanswered and largely unaddressed: How many people are actually “occupying” Wall Street, the District and other cities? Read full article > >

It has been Mitt Romney’s successful strategy to keep a low profile, emerging periodically for fluent debate performances, while the conservative meteors streak and fade. Every week that an untested rival surges, dominates the news and then stumbles, every week that marginal candidates retain loyal supporters and divide the opposition, is a good week at Romney’s Boston headquarters. As a mere youth, I bought a used car in New York to drive to California to be with the woman of my dreams. Inexplicably, she decided to rush back to New York, so I promptly took the car back to the dealer. He made a shockingly low offer. The car had been in an accident, he explained. The chassis was bent. I was flabbergasted. I had just bought the car from him. If the chassis was bent, it was bent when I bought it. The salesman offered me a take-it-or-leave-it shrug. He probably now works on Wall Street. Read full article > >

For the past 10 years, the United States has engaged in constant warfare. Does that mean the next 10 years will be the same, even after U.S. combat troops are out of Iraq and Afghanistan? Put it a different way: We have spent trillions of dollars to create the most professional and powerful military force in the world to fight those wars. It continues to cost hundreds of billions more each year to help sustain this all-volunteer force. Read full article > >

The 10-year-old boy stuck in a psychiatric ward at Children’s National Medical Center for more than a month has been accepted in a Philadelphia residential facility, authorities said Monday, but he can’t go there until it’s determined who will pay for his treatment. The boy has been in Children’s since Sept. 15 . The hospital has been trying to discharge him since Sept. 28, but his parents and Prince George’s County authorities have not come for him. Hospital officials filed a civil suit against his parents and Prince George’s to move him because, they say, the hospital cannot offer the care he needs. Read full article > >

When Federal Reserve policymakers meet to decide the nation’s monetary policy, they usually discuss where the economy is heading and how they should adjust interest rates to try to keep prices stable and Americans employed. At their meeting this week , bigger ideas will be on the table. No major policy changes are expected out of the two-day session beginning Tuesday, but the discussion will probably focus on some core questions about how the central bank communicates with the public about its goals and expectations for the economy. The cover of the book “Young Guns” features its three authors — House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), House Republican Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) and House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) — posing purposefully beneath a subtitle dubbing them “A New Generation of Conservative Leaders.” The man just below Cantor and McCarthy on the leadership ladder, House Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (Ill.), is a few years older, less well-known and has no intention of writing a book anytime soon. It’s already been called the worst album of all time, this unholy union of Lou Reed and Metallica, the multi-headed hydra of unpleasantness known colloquially, though not fondly, as Loutallica. They’ve united to present an 85-minute misery delivery system called “ Lulu ,” loosely based on a series of German expressionist plays that chronicled the adventures of a prostitute-turned-slave murdered by Jack the Ripper. Herman Cain searched his memory for details about what might have caused a woman in the 1990s to accuse him of sexual harassment. No, he couldn’t remember her, not much at all. Then again, there was one time, the Republican presidential candidate told me, when he stood next to the woman and noted that she was about the same height as his wife. He showed me how close he was standing to her by asking a female staffer to stand next to him. It was close. Not touching, but close. Read full article > >
