July 1 pop festival ‘is no plot to ruin rally’

<!– google_ad_section_start –> Thousands of people have voiced support for a boycott of a July 1 music festival featuring K-pop stars and local bands after it was condemned as a political tool to keep young people away from the annual pro-democracy rally. However, the Performance Industry Association (PIA) which is organising the Hong Kong Dome Festival, says it is in fact an alternative protest – against the city’s lack of major venues. Boycott campaign aside, the 18,000 tickets are now sold out. <!– google_ad_section_end –>

Low costs and huge profits irresistible lure for Chinese to mine Ghana’s gold

<!– google_ad_section_start –> Raymond Xie quit his job as an English teacher at a university in Guangxi early last year to join the gold rush in the west African country of Ghana. The 41-year-old and his partners spent about 3 million yuan (HK$3.76 million) establishing a small mine in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region, and set about making a fortune. Three million yuan is not enough to buy a three-bedroom flat in Beijing but it was enough to set Xie on the road to riches overseas as one of an estimated 50,000 Chinese gold miners in Ghana, most of them, like Xie, from Shanglin county. <!– google_ad_section_end –>

Finance chief shrugs off rating fall

<!– google_ad_section_start –> Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah has defended the economy in the face of a falling competitiveness rating, saying it is a periodic adjustment rather than a reflection of structural problems. Heavy property taxes imposed on foreign buyers, which helped drag the city’s rating down from first to third on a global list, were not permanent, he said, and had curbed the growth of rents and property prices. <!– google_ad_section_end –>
