Sunday, April 15th, 2012

If the new romantic comedy “ Think Like a Man ” seems ultra-clear about its message — don’t hate the player, change the game — that’s because it’s based on the hugely popular self-help relationship book “ Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man .” Read full article > >

“The Astaires: Fred & Adele” by Kathleen Riley

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

In 1933 Fred Astaire , a successful young dancer and comedian on the Broadway and London stage, made what turned out to be a decision that altered not merely his life but American popular culture: He left the stage and went to Hollywood, making two films — “Dancing Lady” and “Flying Down to Rio” — that almost immediately established him as a far bigger star. Those movies were just the beginning. Astaire went on to form a stupendously popular dancing partnership with Ginger Rogers , then briefer but not much less luminous ones with Cyd Charisse and Barrie Chase. Probably for as long as people watch movies, Astaire will be synonymous with grace, sophistication and what Kathleen Riley calls “ardent gallantry, restrained yearnings, self-deprecation, and self-confidence.” Read full article > >

‘Scandal,’ indeed! D.C. drama used fake backdrops of Washington

Friday, April 6th, 2012

No worries, Kerry Washington fans, you did not miss a chance to meet the actress when she was filming her new ABC series based on the life of D.C. crisis-management ninja Judy Smith — because “Scandal” did not film here in D.C. Those scenes from Thursday night’s episode where Washington conducted tense, fast-talking conversations in front of the White House and Jefferson Memorial? Fake backdrops , it seems. Real-life Lafayette Park doesn’t have balustrades or marble steps as seen on TV, and that Tidal Basin scene? Well, something was wrong there, just can’t put our finger on it. The D.C. Film Office said the show did not bring production to Washington that they know of; ABC publicists did not get back to us for comment. D.C.’s had a mixed track record with Hollywood lately. NBC’s “The Firm” brought its cameras and stars here for some real on-location shooting last fall — but the show was quickly canceled. We’ll see if HBO’s forthcoming “Veep,” which spent a day or so filming in D.C. (but more of its time in Baltimore), fares better. Read full article > >

Whit Stillman on ‘Damsels in Distress’

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Washington-born writer-director Whit Stillman has gained a reputation for making cult classics that seem ripped from the pages of “The Official Preppy Handbook.” His movies have the power to make edgy indie fans marvel at debutante Manhattanites ( “Metropolitan,” 1990 ), laugh along with insecure 20-somethings living abroad ( “Barcelona,” 1994 ), even tap a foot as Ivy League grads shimmy onscreen during 1998’s “Last Days of Disco.” Read full article > >

Only in Iran: The Green Movement Movie

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Only in Iran, the government makes a movie about cracking down on its protesters and shooting at them, then blames it on foreign spies and the people themselves. A new movie called Ghaladehay-e-Tala or The Golden Collars, premiered for the Persian New Year, is telling the story of the 2009 presidential election and its aftermath which led to what the West knows as the Green Movement. See the trailer here . Screening of this film at this time is significant since two other Iranian movies scheduled to be screened at the time of Persian New Year celebrations were banned while one in particular depicts the activities of  Gasht-e-Irshad or Morality Police which harasses the Iranian youth for not following Islamic codes of clothing and conducts. As the screening of the movie have raised a lot of criticism and anger, this time, Iranians feel betrayed by some of their favorite actors and actresses who have played in the movie and call on the boycott of the film and its characters. Comments on YouTube also have been overwhelming. Those who personally participated in the protests compare the movie with their own experiences. For example, one comment asked how could people be carrying guns when he even didn’t see anyone carrying a stick?! Others, just simply shower the filmmakers, the actors and the government of Islamic Republic with their colorful language. However, my favorite reaction to the movie was this photoshoped poster I found on Facebook which I had to share: Is there any other way I could convince you that Iranians will always find a way to prove they are not their government?
