Thomson Prison In Illinois Is Leading Choice In Obama’s Search For Stateside Gitmo

A senior Obama administration official says that the mostly vacant Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois is the leading choice to relocate Guantanamo Bay detainees, according to CNN . The 1,600-cell, maximimum-security state prison is located about 150 miles west of Chicago and includes a minimum-security unit. If the administration does decide to house the 215 Guantanamo Bay detainees at the prison, the Federal Bureau of Prisons would buy the facility and lease a section of the prison to the Department of Defense specifically for Gitmo inmates, according to Illinois’ Quad-City Times.
