Billy Crystal is replacing Eddie Murphy as host of ABC’s Feb. 26 Academy Awards broadcast. The eight-time Oscars host was tapped Thursday to take over for Murphy by Brian Grazer — the movie mogul who was tapped a day earlier to produce the 2012 Oscarcast, replacing Brett Ratner. Yes, that is, in fact, a double accidental upgrade — in just 24 hours. Way to go, motion picture academy! Read full article > >

ABC and the Motion Picture Academy will be busy Wednesday looking for a new person to exec produce the next Academy Awards broadcast after producer/bad boy Brett Ratner stepped down late Tuesday. His “resignation” comes shortly after he used a homophobic slur in a roomful of reporters during a screening last week for his new movie, “Tower Heist,” in re what he thought about rehearsing. Ratner also went on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show to discuss his sex life — both real and imaginary — in excruciating detail. Read full article > >

The movie director and TV producer Gil Cates, who gained his greatest renown as self-declared “ringmaster” of the most hyped, exciting, wryly amusing, wincingly crass, maudlin and bloated circus in Hollywood — in other words, the Academy Awards — died Oct. 31 in Los Angeles. He was 77. Mr. Cates collapsed in a parking lot at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was founding dean of the School of Theater, Film and Television. Read full article > >

Now that the 2011 Academy Awards are behind us – and we’ve read and watched a number of people compliment and criticize the job done by hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco – it’s time to look ahead and provide the folks who run that giant Oscar ship with some suggestions of our own as to who should host the ceremony next year. First we need to look at whether the whole two-host thing works. I personally don’t like it because it really comes down to chemistry, and when you have only a little time to rehearse it’s hard to form the sort of one-two punch you’d need to be successful with a hosting duo. So, if I were in charge, next year I’d take it back to one host who’s multi-talented and can not only spew out some fantastic one-liners… Read More Read Comments

Sunday evening, February 27, hundreds of millions of movie fans will watch the 83d annual Academy Awards. These viewers may not be aware of a fact that merits particular attention this year, as Wisconson’s public sector employees stand up for their rights: every presenter and almost every recipient on the Oscar broadcast belongs to a labor organization. Every musician in the pit, every camera operator, every cable puller — everyone involved carries a union card! read more
