BAFTA nominations: ‘The Artist’ leads the field

Continuing to assert its award season dominance, “ The Artist ” was nominated for 12 BAFTA Awards today, the British equivalent of the Academy Awards. The silent charmer — winner of the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy — was one of the five British Academy of Film and Television nominees for best film. The others: “The Descendants,” “Drive,” “The Help” and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” Stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo also were nominated in the lead acting categories, while Michel Hazanavicius was recognized in the directing category alongside Martin Scorsese (“Hugo”), Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”), Tomas Alfredson (“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”) and Lynne Ramsay (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”). The movie director and TV producer Gil Cates, who gained his greatest renown as self-declared “ringmaster” of the most hyped, exciting, wryly amusing, wincingly crass, maudlin and bloated circus in Hollywood — in other words, the Academy Awards — died Oct. 31 in Los Angeles. Vaccines are generally safe for most people, the National Academy of Sciences has concluded, dismissing stubborn concerns about supposed links to autism and other serious health problems. In the academy’s first comprehensive review of vaccine safety in 17 years, a committee of experts formed by the Institute of Medicine analyzed more than 1,000 research studies. They concluded that benefits outweigh the risks, which are rare and usually not life-threatening. In a 667-page report released Thursday, the 16-member committee found convincing evidence that vaccines can cause 14 health problems, including seizures, brain inflammation, rashes and fainting, but said those complications appeared to be very uncommon. The committee also concluded there was evidence that some vaccines could cause other complications, such as allergic reactions and temporary joint pain. Read full article > >
