Will Roberts is masterful as Virginia tops Navy in NCAA baseball tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Top-ranked Virginia hardly could have scripted a better start to the NCAA baseball tournament, getting a masterful outing from starter Will Roberts and opportunistic hitting from Danny Hultzen in a 6-0 victory over Navy on Friday in an opening-round game at Davenport Field. Before 4,749 on a picturesque spring afternoon, Roberts struck out a career-high 14, walked none and retired the final 17 for his third shutout and third complete game this season. Not that the junior needed much support, but Hultzen obliged by going 3 for 4 with three RBI, including a triple in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead. Most highly regarded for his accomplishments on the mound , the two-time ACC pitcher of the year also singled in the third to drive in another run, and the Cavaliers (50-9) were well on their way to Saturday’s winners’ bracket in the Charlottesville Region.
