Sunday snow probably won’t be much, but minor forecast changes still possible

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

We’ve been highlighting for several days now the significant chance that tomorrow’s storm tracks too far south to deliver much snow to the area, and as of this afternoon that continues to be the case. The models have mostly now locked in on a storm track that would give the D.C. area 1-2” inches of wet snow at most, with no snow (or at least no accumulating snow) a possibility as well, especially from D.C. to the north.

Greg Sargent: Obama heaps mockery on Romney’s `envy’ charge

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

At an event in Las Vegas this afternoon, Obama offered his most extensive rebuttal by far to the bogus GOP charge that the push for higher taxes on the wealthy is about “class warfare” and “envy.” The whole thing is worth a watch — the tone was not one of outrage, but one laced with a good deal of mockery and derision: Read full article > >

Obama administration to reject Keystone pipeline

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

The Obama administration will announce this afternoon that it is rejecting a Canadian firm’s application for a permit to build and operate the Keystone XL pipeline , a massive project that would have stretched from Canada’s oil sands to refineries in Texas, according to administration officials who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. Having it your way at home: Taste-testing Burger King delivery

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Right around lunchtime this afternoon, my dog Andy the Barking Schnoodle lost his mind. That could only mean one thing: Someone was at the door. In the Rosenwald household, that’s usually a food delivery driver, and that driver is usually handing off pizza or Chinese. Read full article > >

Writers Guild best screenplay nominations: ‘Bridesmaids,’ ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ land nods

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

The Writers Guild of America announced its nominations for best original and adapted movie screenplays this afternoon, giving Oscar prognosticators a sense of the writing nominees that may wind up on Academy Award ballots later this month. Update: Actually, as Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter notes , many of the Oscar-eligible screenplays did not qualify for WGA consideration due to the Guild’s award guidelines. For example, films like “The Artist” and “Drive” are not eligible because they were not created by WGA members. So while some of the nominations below will likely dovetail with the Oscars, they may not be the best gauge of what will be recognized by the Academy. Read full article > >

Harold Meyerson: Obama’s jobs speech: Good plan, good vision, good politics

Friday, September 9th, 2011

That was an enlivened President Obama we saw earlier this evening — impassioned, indignant, non-professorial. And enlivened he should have been, because the American economy trembles on the brink of a double-dip recession, and the Republican opposition has been seized by an ideology that would erode what remains of the once-great American middle class. Not to mention, Obama’s own political future and that of his party are on the line as well. For the past week, the White House has been deliberately low-balling its estimates of what the plan the president unveiled tonight would actually include. When word started getting around this afternoon that this new stimulus would be set at $447 billion for the next year — a rate higher than the $787-billion-over-two-years stimulus that Congress enacted in 2009 — leaders of groups representing the Democratic base breathed a sigh of relief. The size and the substance of this new stimulus give Obama and his party the ability not only to rally many of his disenchanted core supporters but to reach out to voters in the middle of the political spectrum. VRE cracks down on fare evasion, other offenses

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

New to the Washington area and its notorious commutes , Cheryl Rouland was eager to find the easiest way to get to work in Southeast Washington after moving to Manassas in June. She tried Virginia Railway Express . But while riding the train home from L’Enfant Station one day, Rouland received a $100 fine for fare evasion. She was dumbstruck, she said, because she had bought a roundtrip ticket that morning. Rouland was cited because she had failed to validate the afternoon portion of her “two-ride” ticket, which under state law is considered riding the train without payment. Read full article > >
