Charlie Manuel says Stephen Strasburg could throw back-to-back no-hitters

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

In the Philiies dugout this afternoon, as reporters hurled questions at Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel, the subject of baseball records surfaced, specifically which ones could or could not be broken. Someone suggested no one would match Johnny Vander Meer’s consecutive no-hitters. Manuel immediately disagreed – and mentioned Stephen Strasburg as one reason why. “That one could be got,” Manuel said. “I see Strasburg, he’s very capable of throwing back-to-back no-hitters. When I saw the type of the stuff that he has, and pitchers that dominate the game like he does, guys like Pedro Martinez in their heyday, they could do that. Because not only could they pitch. They could overpower you.” Read full article > >

Sade, reluctantly back in the spotlight

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

The conference room at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Baltimore is oppressively taupe. Taupe walls, taupe chairs, taupe tablecloths. Pull back the taupe curtains and enjoy the view: a taupe building made of taupe bricks. ¶ “It’s a bit grim in here, isn’t it?” asks Sade. ¶ Casually dressed in red denim, red lipstick, a red satin jacket and silver hoop earrings big enough to shoot basketballs through, she beelines for a switch on the wall and dims the lights. Soft. Softer. Off. ¶ As she takes a seat in the afternoon sunlight, those reds seem to glow like cosmic embers. At 52, one of the most magnetic singers of our time sips lukewarm coffee from a paper cup and tries to explain how music’s inexplicable gravity pulled her out of a nine-year silence. ¶ “It’s that feeling that you can get a little bit Read full article > >

Incumbents lose, Democrats win with California redistricting proposal

Friday, June 10th, 2011

A new redistricting proposal in California would draw nearly half the state’s congressional incumbents into districts with one another and significantly expand Democrats’ ability to win seats in the Golden State in 2012 and beyond. The state’s new Citizens Redistricting Commission voted this afternoon to release its first draft proposal for the new congressional map. The proposed map was expected to include huge changes and shake up the delegation by drawing numerous members into districts with each other — and it definitely did that — but in the runup to the release it wasn’t as clear which party would benefit from all those changes. From behind his shades, Sulaimon Brown talks to council

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

The witness wore shades. The man who declared Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) a party to a payoff made his long-awaited appearance before the inquisitors of the D.C. Council on Monday, and if the moment weren’t charged enough, Sulaimon Brown made it all the stranger by refusing to remove his sunglasses throughout his afternoon in the spotlight. Brown, the fringe mayoral candidate who alleges that Gray’s top campaign officials gave him money orders and cash — and the promise of a city job — in exchange for his help steering votes away from then-Mayor Adrian Fenty in last year’s mayoral race, battled all day with council members. TOP GOOGLE DOODLES: Our Fave Five logo animations so far

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

When Google’s “Doodle” to mark the late Martha Graham’s birthday took viral centerstage today, the beguilingly lined short animation reminded many viewers of the creative potential for the search engine’s big-billboard logo. “This is my first Google Doodle!  I’m not sure how many animators or designers they have on staff at Google, but the team I worked with was great,” said the Martha Graham animator, Ryan Woodward , in his Post live online chat this afternoon. That quote got us to thinking about not only our favorite Google Doodle logos in recent years — from Scooby-Doo to Will Eisner (and here’s a Post sample gallery of them )— but also, particularly, our favorite Google animations.
