‘Bering Sea Gold’: Restoring reality TV’s lost glimmer

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

The state of Alaska and the genre of reality docu-TV have almost animalistic mating urges. They just can’t stay away from one another, which is how we at home came to know too much about crab fishing, gold prospecting, grizzlies, snow machines, ice-road truckers, chartered plane pilots and the taste of the season’s first whale blubber. Add to that a certain out-of-work politician and the humdrum patrols of the state’s troopers, and it’s been a whole lot of defrosted drama. Yet very little of it has made for memorable watching. National Guard helps Alaska fishing town dig out from massive snows

Monday, January 9th, 2012

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Dozens of National Guard troops have arrived to help an Alaska fishing town dig out from massive snows that have collapsed roofs, trapped some people in homes, and triggered avalanches. Cordova is used to snow, but not like this season’s blanketing. The Guard reported more than 18 feet of snow has fallen in the past weeks, although the National Weather Service did not immediately have a measurement. Read full article > >

HBO releases first trailer for ‘Game Change’; stars Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin, Ed Harris as John McCain (Video)

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

“I’ll just grit my teeth and bear whatever comes,” former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin told Fox News’s Sean Hannity back in March about HBO’s upcoming flick detailing Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign, in which Palin will be played by Julianne Moore. Well, on Wednesday, the teeth-gritting began: HBO sent out a video tease that offered a very quick look at Moore’s chameleon-like performance in “Game Change,” based on book of same name, which the pay cable network will debut in March. ‘The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin,’ by Joe McGinniss

Friday, September 16th, 2011

In an America where a whopping 66 percent of adults hold an unfavorable view of 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (according to a recent Bloomberg poll), author Joe McGinniss has done something truly remarkable. He actually makes the short-serving former Alaska governor and widely panned reality TV star a slightly more sympathetic character, at least for the regrettable time one wastes reading “The Rogue,” his sketchily sourced compendium of low blows and inconsistent accusations. Palin cancels trip to Sudan

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin has canceled a trip next month to war-ravaged Sudan, one of the most unstable nations in the world and the focus of passionate advocacy within the U.S. evangelical community. Palin scrapped her visit to the North African country for scheduling reasons, several sources close to her said. She was planning to travel with Franklin Graham, the son of evangelical leader Billy Graham, as well as Fox News personality Greta Van Susteren, to the July 9 independence ceremony of South Sudan, the sources said. Van Susteren also canceled her trip. Graham said on Wednesday that he still plans to go. Read full article > >
