BENGHAZI, Libya —Moammar Gaddafi’s wife and three of his children have apparently fled across the border into Algeria, underscoring how much of Libya has slipped out of the control of the former autocrat, who ruled the country for about 42 years. But there was still no indication where Gaddafi was hiding . Rebel leaders fear that violence will continue until Gaddafi is captured and Libyans can see that he is no longer in power. Reflections on Ramadan

This past month has seen a sustained intensity of violence and death around the world. For Muslims, the month was meant to be one in which peace was established within ourselves and our societies, as this is the holiest of all the months in Islam. Ramadan is a month that Muslims look forward to, as it is meant to create a stronger connection between humanity and God. How ironic, then, to see the death and destruction perpetrated in Libya, Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Algeria, during a month dedicated to peace and harmony.

The popular protests in Tunisia that have caused upheaval in the government were sparked by a young man, an unemployed college graduate, setting himself on fire in protest. He later died. Now, reports are coming in from other countries in the region — Egypt, Algeria, and Mauritania — that other demonstrators are turning to self-immolation.
