The power has gone out in a typical American town. Wait — it’s not just the electricity. The phones don’t work, either. Portable radios are dead. Cars won’t start. But then lawn mowers and cars and lights inexplicably start and stop on their own. What’s going on? A meteor? Sunspots? Or are there, as Tommy’s comic book suggests, aliens among us, preparing for a takeover? Suspicion poisons the air. Neighbor turns on neighbor. A scapegoat is blamed. A shot is fired. Panic, madness, riot. read more

Q: I might be a little obsessed, but whenever I try to use Twitter from my Kindle’s mobile web browser, I run into complications. Is it possible to send out messages while I’m enjoying the latest bestseller? A : In a mid-2010 software update, Kindle was outfitted with Facebook and Twitter functionality, allowing users to tweet out 140-character snippets of any book they were reading at the time. You know, inspiring passages for all of your followers to enjoy; using social media to build up some renewed hype for the classics. Pushed out largely to satisfy some social networking maniacs that require access to their online accounts at all times, the Kindle’s built-in Twitter update is minimal at best. It was meant to turn the e-reader into a multipurpose device without alienating the primary audience: those who want a convenient on-the-go experience that is similar to reading a traditional paperback. Before the software update, Twitter users who tried to “tweendle” (yes, tweeting from the Kindle even had its own catchphrase back in 2009) had a terrible user experience: The system crashed more times than not when attempting to access Twitter’s website from Kindle’s mobile web browser and long tweets, even those under the 140-character limit, were often cut short for unknown reasons. KindleTwit promises to help you overcome all of those difficulties. A site optimized for use from the Kindle web browser, KindleTwit allows you to post tweets into a simple text input box and send them out into the world. Using the site, you can also read through your Twitter stream and see if you have any new @replies. It’s almost impossible to click-through to any links or media previews that other people send to you, and direct messaging has to be done using the traditional method (input: “D Username Message”), but the service covers all of the basics for those that just can’t wait until TweetDeck loads on their iPhone. Tools mentioned in this entry: KINDLETWIT More questions? View the complete Toolkit archive .

New ‘Green Lantern’ Image A new image of the Green Lantern alien Tomar-Re has landed online. For those who aren’t familiar with the character, he’s a member of the Green Lantern Corps. who takes a liking to Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) after he’s dubbed the latest Green Lantern from Earth. Tomar then becomes somewhat of a mentor to Jordan, teaching him what it means to be a Green Lantern. That, and he also looks pretty freaky. ‘Avengers’ Cameo in ‘Thor’ Those looking to keep far away from cool cameo spoilers may not want to read beyond this sentence. The Wrap reports that Jeremy Renner will be making a cameo as his Avengers character Hawkeye in the film Thor, due out in May. No word on when he’ll show up in the film, or how… Read More Read Comments

Today, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. Fourty-one mostly Republican senators voted against a bill which would have provided young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. by their parents a path to legalization by pursuing a college education or serving in the military. 55 voted in the affirmative. read more

Daniel Sarewitz looks at the gap in political ID among scientists, only 6 percent of whom ID as Republican, according to a recent survey: The results of climate science, delivered by scientists who are overwhelmingly Democratic, are used over a period of decades to advance a political agenda that happens to align precisely with the ideological preferences of Democrats. Coincidence–or causation? Now this would be a good case for Mythbusters. During the Bush administration, Democrats discovered that they could score political points by accusing Bush of being anti-science. In the process, they seem to have convinced themselves that they are the keepers of the Enlightenment spirit, and that those who disagree with them on issues like climate change are fundamentally irrational. Meanwhile, many Republicans have come to believe that mainstream science is corrupted by ideology and amounts to no more than politics by another name. Attracted to fringe scientists like the small and vocal group of climate skeptics, Republicans appear to be alienated from a mainstream scientific community that by and large doesn’t share their political beliefs. The climate debacle is only the most conspicuous example of these debilitating tendencies, which play out in issues as diverse as nuclear waste disposal, protection of endangered species, and regulation of pharmaceuticals. I don’t know. I think this is also a reflection of the fact that American conservatism is increasingly a movement of white Christian populism. And specifically, a kind of white Christian populism with deep roots in the South. Science is very much the preserve of the institutions of higher education where “the elites” plot the subjugation of the common man. Moreover, a trust in science necessitates a trust in “expertise,” and a skepticism of “common sense.” That basically runs counter to everything Sarah Palin represents.

The first teaser trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon has arrived online, and right away you can tell that this installment feels different (maybe more serious?) from the previous two. It’s a teaser, yes, but it’s a two-and-a-half-minute teaser that recreates Neil Armstrong’s iconic moon landing in 1969, but instead makes it seem as if NASA had ulterior motives that included heading to the dark side of the moon to inspect an alien spacecraft. Upon scoping out the spacecraft, we can briefly see what looks to be Transformers inside, and as the camera moves around we eventually find our way to the face of a new Transformer who may or may not be Alpha Trion, one of the original 13 Transformers, and apparently a father-figure to Optimus Prime. In some versions of Transformers, he is… Read More Read Comments

Washington – The House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday night that would provide a conditional path to citizenship for as many as 500,000 children of illegal immigrants. While the House approved the Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act by a vote of 216-198, the fate of the DREAM Act remained uncertain as the Senate postponed a test vote on the measure. read more

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ to Shoot Back-to-Back Sequels? Disney proved they want to continue their Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise by moving forward with On Stranger Tides, due out on May 20th, but what about past that? Well HitFix claims via a Disney source that the studio is asking cast and crew to set aside a major block of time so that they can shoot Pirates 5 and 6 back-to-back in the same way they shot parts 2 and 3. No word yet on where the stories will be coming from, or how they’ll snag Johnny Depp away from his busy schedule to shoot an additional two movies, but it sounds like Disney is eager to keep making Pirates films in order to capitalize on it being one of their most successful franchises ever. HitFix imagines we’ll start hearing more… Read More Read Comments
