Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Talayna Clements said she worked hard for her money as a stripper at the Mile High Club in Clinton. But at the end of each shift, managers would deduct a chunk of her tips, and she was routinely stiffed for the hours she worked, Clements alleged in a lawsuit filed in Prince George’s Circuit Court. Clements, 28, whose stage name was “Casey,” worked at the club from April 2010 through August 2011, according to the lawsuit, filed by attorney Jimmy A. Bell. In an interview, Clements said she quit because of the alleged mistreatment. Read full article > >

For Mexico’s accused criminals, made-for-TV confessions

Monday, August 29th, 2011

MEXICO CITY — Hours after his capture, authorities paraded the alleged mass murderer Oscar Osvaldo Garcia before the news media to have his picture taken. This performance — called “the presentation” — is an almost daily ritual in Mexico. What is new: Mexican law enforcement officers are increasingly bolstering these high-profile “perp walks” with edited video clips of the accused confessing their crimes on camera. In Mexico, the bad guys are allowed to say they want a lawyer. Instead, they say, “I killed 600 people.” Read full article > >

FIFA suspends executives bin Hammam, Warner; clears Blatter in bribe investigation

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

ZURICH — FIFA suspended Mohamed bin Hammam and Jack Warner on Sunday amid allegations the two executive committee members bribed voters in the presidential election campaign. The ethics committee also cleared FIFA president Sepp Blatter of ignoring the alleged bribes. The decisions pave the way for Blatter to be re-elected unopposed to a fourth term Wednesday. Soccer’s governing body said bin Hammam, a Qatari who leads Asia’s soccer confederation, and Warner, a FIFA vice president from Trinidad, will now face a full FIFA inquiry. If found guilty, they could be expelled from FIFA and banned from all soccer activity. Read full article > >

Cornel West on Obama is no better than a birther

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Anyone who knows me, and knows me well, knows that I have little patience for the “Blacker than thou” crowd. These are the self-appointed guardians of what it means to be black — a decidedly limited and ignorant perspective that has more to do with the accuser’s insecurities than the alleged transgressions of the accused. And the leader of the pack these days seems to be Dr. Cornel West. In an interview with the Web site Truthdig, the brilliant Princeton professor took off after President Obama in a manner that was myopic, offensive and embarrassingly petty. Read full article > >

A perp walk kills a political career

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

I t’s almost enough to give socialism a bad name. We don’t know whether Dominique Strauss-Kahn — who heads the International Monetary Fund and, until a few days ago, was likely to be the Socialist Party candidate for president of France — is guilty of the alleged sexual assault for which he was arrested . Like anyone, he is presumed innocent until court proceedings prove otherwise. We do know, however, that at the time of the reported incident on Saturday, Strauss-Kahn was resident in a $3,000-a-night luxury suite at a posh midtown Manhattan hotel. We also know that when he was taken into police custody hours later, aboard a Paris-bound jetliner that was moments from takeoff at John F. Kennedy International Airport, police found him comfortably ensconced in the first-class cabin. Read full article > >
