Supreme Court debates church and state boundary in fired teacher’s case

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Few issues test Supreme Court justices like trying to find the proper boundary between church and state. And that difficulty was again on display Wednesday as they considered whether a former teacher at a church school could pursue her claim that she was fired after becoming ill. Only Justice Antonin Scalia seemed completely sure of the answer, repeatedly taking the position that a church’s personnel decisions about those who serve in ministerial positions are off limits to government inquiry. For example, in “Terra Nova,” everyone appears to know the answer to the question “ Guys, where are we ?” Thus far on “Terra Nova,” no one has miraculously regained an ability to walk . And, at least in the pilot for the dinosaur-filled Fox drama, none of the characters routinely refer to their fellow Terra Novians using clever, pop culture-infused nicknames . Read full article > >

Twitter vs. privacy in Britain

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

In the age of Twitter, can no sin remain secret? Few know the answer better than Ryan Giggs. The married soccer star sought and won an injunction that barred London’s feisty tabloids from publishing his name in connection with a dalliance. But then the users of Twitter rose up like a Greek chorus, dispatching electronic missives that unmasked Giggs as the Don Juan of the pitch. Even as British newspapers remained legally gagged, the affair became Britain’s worst-kept secret, inspiring jeers from fans at matches and, ultimately, Giggs’s public naming and shaming in Parliament late last month. Why Palin is good for Bachmann

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Is there room for two socially conservative women in the Republican presidential race? Ask just about any political observer these days, and the answer is almost unequivocally “no” — at least, when it comes former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann . But there is also plenty of reason to believe that Palin’s re-emergence into the political stratosphere could be an asset to Bachmann. Provided that Palin doesn’t actually run for president in 2012, of course, and Bachmann does. Read full article > >
