In the years between the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and today, there have been many attempts to make art in response to the tragedy. The resulting works have been sentimental, overblown, angry, poetic, polemic, maudlin, mysterious, clumsy, subtle and beautiful. All of those qualities are on display at the Edison Place Gallery , where a showcase of work by 39 artists is marking this weekend’s anniversary. Part of the multi-site 9/11 Arts Project, “Ten Years After 9/11” is, unsurprisingly, an uneven show. It is also, at times, kind of wonderful. Read full article > >

Mall slashings: Police issue arrest warrant for suspect

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man who they said is a suspect in a bizarre series of attacks in which young women were slashed in the buttocks at busy Fairfax County shopping malls. Fairfax police are looking for 40-year-old Johnny D. Guillen Pimentel, who they believe may have left the area. Police said he might be driving a blue 2003 Honda Civic with the Virginia tag KLX2689. Pimentel so far is being sought in one of the attacks, but police previously have said they think the same man has cut nine women in their teens and early 20s since February. Read full article > >

8 killed in strikes on Gaza after deadly raid in Israel

JERUSALEM — Militants in the Gaza Strip fired rockets into Israel and Israeli aircraft carried out deadly strikes across the coastal territory Friday in a surge of cross-border violence a day after attackers killed eight people near Israel’s frontier with Egypt . The multiple attacks Thursday north of the Red Sea resort of Eilat were the deadliest such incident in Israel in three years and threatened to ignite a new round of hostilities across the Israel-Gaza border after months of relative calm. The killings of an Egyptian military officer and two policemen in border skirmishes after the attacks have also enraged Egyptians, putting strain on the decades-long relationship between Egypt and Israel. CHICAGO — An officer in Pakistan’s intelligence service chose a Jewish center as a target for the 2008 Mumbai attacks and then helped launch a new plot against Denmark, the star witness in a terrorism trial in Chicago said Tuesday. In his second day of testimony, David Coleman Headley , a confessed Pakistani American terrorist, revealed more details about close ties between Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) and Lashkar-i-Taiba, the group accused of carrying out the attacks that killed 166 people , including six Americans.
