CANBERRA, Australia — Japan has agreed to release without charge three Australian activists who boarded a Japanese vessel off southwest Australia as part of a campaign to stop whale hunting in Antarctic waters, Australia’s attorney-general said Tuesday. Guantanamo detainees protest on anniversary

To mark 10 years of military detention at Guantanamo Bay , human rights groups are organizing events worldwide this week, from rallies to flash mobs to concerts. The detainees themselves are marking the anniversary in quieter fashion, with peaceful demonstrations. Detainees are planning three days of protests, beginning Tuesday, according to an attorney for a handful of the men. Some will refuse to return to their cells for the four-hour nightly lockdown and will attempt to sleep in the recreation areas. Others plan to refuse food for three days. Read full article > >

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) announced Sunday that he has reconsidered his decision from Saturday and will not seek to get several GOP presidential candidates added to the state’s primary ballot. Every candidate except Mitt Romney and Ron Paul failed to meet the stringent requirements to get on the ballot for the state’s March 6 primary, and Cuccinelli said Saturday that he would seek to get them added to the ballot. Two doctors who Maryland authorities say botched an abortion last year in Elkton have been indicted on murder charges — in what appears to be the first use of the state’s fetal homicide law involving a medical professional performing surgery. “We’re in uncharted territory,” Cecil County State’s Attorney Edward D.E. Rollins said Friday. He declined to comment further because the indictment will remain sealed until the suspects are arraigned in Maryland. They were arrested Wednesday in New Jersey and in Utah. Bradley Manning opened his pretrial hearing Friday with a surprise demand that the investigating officer recuse himself on grounds that he cannot be perceived as impartial in the case against Manning, who is charged with leaking a trove of government secrets to WikiLeaks . The attorney, David E. Coombs, made the charge against Army Lt. Col. Paul Almanza, who is presiding over the hearing at Fort Meade, Md., to determine whether Manning should face a court-martial. President Obama lashed out at Congress on Thursday for blocking his nomination to head a consumer financial watchdog agency, saying Americans are frustrated with legislators for holding up critical appointments to win concessions on other matters. Speaking shortly after the Senate rejected his appointment of former Ohio attorney General Richard Cordray as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Obama said his Capitol Hill adversaries were not acting “on the level” in their consideration of the public interest.
