Blasting Mozart to drive criminals away

Friday, January 20th, 2012

S ome months ago, I was sitting at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York with enough time on my hands that I actually noticed the music coming over the speakers in the ceiling. It was the scherzo from Schubert’s first piano trio. Schubert’s piano trios are among my favorite pieces in the universe, but as I listened, I found that I wasn’t relaxing; quite the contrary. The music sounded awful: tinny, hard-edged, aggressive. I wanted to get away. Read full article > >

@Work Advice: Karla Miller examines what could be a pattern of resigning women

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Reader: I have a job I like and am good at, that pays me reasonably well, with good hours and benefits and co-workers that I love. All “yay!” but my manager is a nightmare. She targets the successful, outgoing females in our office. There was one she ran off in the time I have been here, and she has now set her sights on me. Despite my above-average performance review last year, she has now decided that I need a “performance improvement plan” and has taken me off of more high-profile projects. She is basing these decisions on minutiae and is flat-out wrong on many details but is obviously in a position of authority over me. I fear repercussions if I take this to her supervisor or HR but am worried for my job security. Read full article > >

Obama to use executive power to name consumer watchdog chief over GOP objections

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

President Obama plans to use its executive authority to install Richard Cordray as head of a federal consumer watchdog agency in a defiant move after the Senate rejected the nomination last month, a White House official confirmed Wednesday. The president will portay the appointment as an escalation of the White House’s “we can’t wait” campaign to take action that does not require congressional approval. Read full article > >

Sunday, December 18th, 2011
