Broken light in D.C.? Odds are it won’t be for long.

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

The District government has vastly improved its delivery of basic services over the past decade and by one key measurement has continued to improve this year, according to a review of city data. An analysis of how long it takes city workers to respond to certain problems shows that in 2000, the average request for service took nearly 90 days to resolve. That has dropped to five or fewer days over the past several months, the data show. Read full article > >

Steven Pearlstein: When life imitates basketball

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

The conventional wisdom on the season-jeopardizing dispute between the NBA and its players union goes something like this: Millionaire owners and millionaire players are once again squabbling over how to divvy up a $4 billion annual booty, even as 15 million Americans can’t find full-time work and the average worker hasn’t received a raise in a decade. Growing field of ‘smart grid’ technology faces opposition over pricing, privacy

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Ralph Izzo, the chief executive of the New Jersey’s PSEG, isn’t your average utility executive. At Columbia University, he studied mechanical engineering as an undergraduate and later earned a doctorate in applied physics. At the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, he did numerical simulations of fusion experiments and published or presented 35 papers on something called “magnetohydrodynamic modeling.” Read full article > >

MREs get a new kick with caffeinated jerky and Zapplesauce

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

And now, from the folks who developed the atomic bomb, Kevlar underwear and the Humvee, presenting the latest in war-fighting technology: Caffeinated meat. That’s right, an Army lab here is testing a beef jerky stick that looks and tastes just like your average Slim Jim but contains an equivalent of a cup of coffee’s worth of caffeine to give even the sleepiest soldier that up-and-at-’em boost. Bobby Flay to open second burger joint in College Park

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The grill has barely been seasoned at the K Street NW location and Bobby Flay is already itching to unleash a second Bobby’s Burger Palace in the Washington area. A College Park outlet is expected to open sometime next month, a spokeswoman for the celebrity chef confirmed. The second location of Bobby’s Burger Palace will severely test the willpower, not to mention the weekly budget, of the average University of Maryland student. The burger joint will be located on the retail level of the Varsity at College Park , the six-story complex that redefines student housing. The Varsity, it seems, will not only offer U-Md. students flat-screen TVs, granite countertops, tanning beds and a fitness center, but also a chance to bite into gourmet ground beef. How a Kindle tablet could shake up the market

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Amazon’s got something up its sleeve for Wednesday, and the general expectation is that the company will unleash an Android-based tablet unlike any other, with its own, independent flavor of the market-leading operating system. TechCrunch’s MG Siegler reported that he’s had a hands-on session with the device and that it will be a 7-inch slate with a backlit, capacitive color touchscreen. Sounds pretty standard for an Android tablet, right? Maybe even less functional than your average Android slab, since Siegler reports that the tablet will have no camera and will be WiFi only. Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence and more reasons to watch the MTV Video Music Awards

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

The MTV Video Music Awards , which air tonight at 9 p.m. ET, admittedly can be a ridiculous affair that often focuses more on “controversial moments” than musical talent. But if you’re the kind of person who feels compelled to keep up on pop cultural current events — and if you read this blog, you must be — then you’ll probably be watching tonight. So what will people be tweeting and talking about during and after the ceremony? As always, some of the things that happen at the VMAs will be completely unpredictable. (Or at least orchestrated, but seemingly unpredictable to the average viewer.) But, in addition to Selena Gomez’s hosting gig during the pre-show, here are five pre-announced VMA spectacles that will likely capture some attention. Read full article > >

Muddle your way through summer

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Most bartenders hate a muddler. If you really want to darken your average bartender’s day, order a bunch of mojitos or caipirinhas on a busy Friday night. Muddling mint and limes is too time-consuming, they’ll complain. Muddling with sugar or simple syrup is too sticky, they’ll whine. A couple years ago, at Tales of the Cocktail , the huge annual spirits conference in New Orleans, I listened to a panel of bartenders from around the world plotting a movement to eliminate tedious muddling in high-volume bars. “In Europe,” said one British star-tender, witheringly, “we’re over fruit.” Read full article > >
