E.U. Film Showcase: At AFI Silver, balance of power is temporarily tipped

Friday, November 4th, 2011

There’s a certain symmetry in the fact that the G-20 summit ended Friday in Cannes, France, home of the world’s most famous film festival, just as the European Union Film Showcase arrived at the American Film Institute in Silver Spring . While Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy, George Papandreou and President Obama wrestled with the debt crisis and the future of the euro zone , filmgoers here began to enjoy an upside-down universe on screen, where looming financial and political disasters promise to recede and the balance of power can be at least temporarily tipped. Nationals eager to welcome Ryan Zimmerman back from DL

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

The Washington Nationals have missed their best player for more than two months. They’ve missed the buzz in the crowd when Ryan Zimmerman charges a slow-rolling groundball and whips a sidearm throw across the infield, the steadiness he provides in their clubhouse, the fear from the opposing dugout that he might walk to the plate in the ninth inning with the game in the balance. They are on the brink of having all of that for the first time in 58 games, but there is also something simpler that they have been missing. “It’s just having Zim,” Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond said. “It’s like missing your brother for the whole season.” Read full article > >

Fable

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

New absurdly allegorical paintings by Edward del Rosario Set against monochrome backgrounds, painter Edward del Rosario ‘s fairytale-like scenes depict people counterposed with nature in charmingly unsettling ways. The Brooklyn-based artist has been exploring the subject for the past eight years, each piece adding to a larger meta-narrative that explores the “aftermath of a post-colonial world.” His latest installment of curious paintings will show at L.A.’s Richard Heller gallery in the upcoming exhibition simply titled ” Fable .” An active performance artist while earning his MFA at RISD, del Rosario’s theatrical roots are evidenced by the comedically tense or absurd situations in which he carefully depicts his characters. The melodramatic situations often depict his characters’ misunderstandings of each other and their conflicts over the balance of power. As explained in a 2009 interview with Lowdown Magazine , del Rosario’s performances, influenced by absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco, still inform his painterly study of social interaction and group mentality. “Fable” is on view at the Richard Heller Gallery from 26 March 2011 through 30 April 2011.
