HOUSTON — As the Maryland men’s basketball team played several states away, Shaquille O’Neal Cleare, its most touted prospect in a decade, sat in the third row of a yellow school bus that rumbled over East Texas potholes and past roadside tumbleweed and the occasional skunk. Read full article > >

A month ago at the Maui Invitational, Jason Clark and the Georgetown men’s basketball team needed overtime to dispatch the Memphis Tigers . Thursday’s rematch went a bit smoother for the 16th-ranked Hoyas. Clark scored a game-high 18 points and Hollis Thompson contributed 17 for Georgetown, which built a 20-point lead early in the second half, then held on for a 70-59 victory at Verizon Center. The Georgetown men’s basketball team preserved its perfect record against Howard and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. But it wasn’t as easy as expected. After watching a double-digit lead get whittled to two points, the 18th-ranked Hoyas needed a late surge led by freshman Otto Porter to pull out a 62-48 victory that did not leave Coach John Thompson III impressed with his team’s effort or execution. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Georgetown men’s basketball team played its first true road game of the season on Thursday night, and what a task it was: A game in Coleman Coliseum against undefeated Alabama , ranked 12th in the country largely on the strength of its unforgiving defense. So the Hoyas figured points would be at a premium and the outcome could come down to a late possession. Sure enough, junior forward Hollis Thompson had the ball in his hands with the game on the line, and after his three-pointer swished through the twine with 1.8 seconds left and Alabama’s desperation heave clanked off the rim, Georgetown celebrated a 57-55 triumph before a capacity crowd of 15,383. CHARLOTTESVILLE — Hidden behind a curtain of turnovers and missed shots for 13 periods this season, the complete version of the Virginia men’s basketball team unveiled itself in the second half of Tuesday night’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge match-up against No. 14 Michigan . After a first half in which the Cavaliers at one point went seven minutes without scoring a basket, Virginia made half its shots after the intermission and stormed to a 70-58 victory that carried short- and long-term benefits. The Wolverines ( 5-2 ) stood as the first — and likely the only — high-quality opponent the Cavaliers ( 6-1 ) will face in nonconference play. Read full article > >

Reggie Love, a key member of the Obama entourage, is planning to leave the White House by the end of the year, people close to the administration said. Love, 30, is a popular, gregarious figure in the White House. A onetime forward for the Duke Blue Devils basketball team, Love started out as a staff assistant in Obama’s Senate office after college, rising to become his personal assistant, known as the “body man.” Read full article > >

By early evening Sunday in Washington, Georgetown’s men’s basketball team will conclude its three-game trip to China — against a less physically aggressive team than the Bayi Rockets, one hopes. Replaying the video Saturday — hands, feet, chairs and bottles flying amid the chaos — it’s still so surreal. The Great Brawl, of course, was not on Georgetown’s itinerary Thursday in Beijing, just two days after the Hoyas visited the only man-made structure visible from space. Read full article > >
