Four Marines questioned in video scandal

U.S. military officials said Friday they have questioned four Marines who were videotaped while urinating on Afghan corpses but that a criminal investigation was still at an early stage. Maryann B. Cummings, a spokeswoman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, said all four Marines are in the United States. DIAMOND HARBOUR, India — Police raided illegal distilleries and dismantling dozens of liquor dens Friday across an eastern Indian district where 170 people have died after drinking bootleg alcohol that had been mixed with toxic methanol. Twelve people have been arrested in connection with making and distributing the cheap, illicit liquor, but police were still searching for the kingpin of the operation, District Magistrate Naraya Swarup Nigam said. They hunted in sacks of rice, burrowed in the garden and checked the chicken pen. “They said they were looking for money,” recalled Lo, a 52-year-old retired soldier whose younger brother — a senior officer in the Taiwanese military — had just been arrested in Taipei, the capital, and charged with spying for China.
