Arlington taxi fares to increase

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Arlington County taxicab riders will pay 10 cents more per mile in 2012, the County Board decided Saturday, and passengers younger than 12 who accompany a full-fare customer will get a free ride. The fare increase was intended to help cabbies who have gone more than three years without one. Originally the board planned to raise the “drop fee,” the charge when the meter starts running, by 25 cents and require all 765 licensed cabs to accept credit cards. About 90 percent of the taxis accept credit cards. Read full article > >

Transportation bill would expand board of Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

A move by Congress may allow members of the board that oversees Reagan National and Dulles International airports to be removed by their appointing bodies and increase the size of the panel, which is supervising the construction of the Metrorail extension to Loudoun County . Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) has pushed for legislation that would expand the board of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority from 13 to 17. Under his plan, Virginia would get two new appointments and Maryland and the District would each get one additional member. Read full article > >

Jump in euro-zone interest rates hits France

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Borrowing costs for European governments jumped across the board Tuesday, and new data confirmed that the region’s economy is slowing , evidence on two key fronts that leaders of the euro area have yet to contain its stubborn financial crisis. The rise in interest rates hit Spain, Italy and — perhaps most worrying — France. French borrowing costs outstripped German costs, which serve as a regional benchmark, by the most since the adoption of the euro more than a decade ago. Read full article > >

The Influence Industry: Judicial elections, corporate policies give glimpse into 2012

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Two studies scheduled to be released Thursday offer contrasting predictions for the 2012 elections: Outside groups are likely to spend more money than ever, but many top corporations may not be among them. The first analysis , by a trio of advocacy organizations, found that almost a third of the money spent on state judicial elections last year came from outside interest groups — a dramatic departure from historic norms. The authors argue that the pattern is a harbinger of the spending to come across the board next year. Read full article > >

Arlington controls big-box store developments

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

In a unanimous vote, the Arlington County Board decided Saturday to require big-box retail stores to go through special scrutiny before they can be built on any of the few remaining sites in the county large enough to accommodate them. Prompted by reports that Wal-Mart was interested in putting a 50,000-square-foot store along Interstate 395 in Shirlington, the board altered its zoning ordinances to require any developments of that size or larger, or ones that require more than 200 parking spaces, to go through its special-exemption-use process. Cozy relationships and ‘peer benchmarking’ send CEOs’ pay soaring

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — As the board of Amgen convened at the company’s headquarters in March, chief executive Kevin W. Sharer seemed an unlikely candidate for a raise. Shareholders at the company, one of the nation’s largest biotech firms, had lost 3 percent on their investment in 2010 and 7 percent over the past five years. The company had been forced to close or shrink plants, trimming the workforce from 20,100 to 17,400. And Sharer, a 63-year-old former Navy engineer, was already earning lots of money — about $15 million in the previous year, plus such perks as two corporate jets. Read full article > >

Md. cuts economic outlook, citing slow growth

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Maryland’s chief fiscal leaders cut the state’s economic outlook Wednesday, saying a stagnated national recovery would depress state tax collections and employment gains forecasted for next year and beyond. Projections that growth would boost tax revenue by 4.7 percent over the coming fiscal year were overly optimistic. The growth will probably be closer to 2.8 percent, according to the Board of Revenue Estimates, which consists of the state comptroller, the state treasurer and the governor’s budget director.
