Debt collectors harassed consumers with violent threats, FTC says

Two California debt collection firms used abusive tactics to harass financially distressed consumers, with one firm threatening to kill debtors’ pets or desecrate the bodies of their deceased children, the Federal Trade Commission says. In a complaint filed in a California federal district court a few weeks ago, the FTC alleged that Rumson, Bolling & Associates harassed a woman who was unable to fully pay for her daughter’s funeral. According to the agency, Rumson employees called the woman and told her that they would dig up her daughter’s body and hang it from a tree. They threatened to shoot and eat her dog. Bombs target Iraqi police, Baghdad airport

Iraq was hit with another spate of violence Thursday morning when several high-ranking police commanders where killed near Fallujah and mortars where lobbed into the internationally-protected Green Zone and onto the grounds of Baghdad’s main airport, according to Iraqi security officials. In Fallujah, the site of some of the fiercest fighting following the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, gunmen attacked a police patrol with automatic weapons, killing two officers, officials reported. The gunmen then set the officers’ car on fire, apparently with their bodies still inside, officials said. Read full article > >
