HOUSTON — Doctors repaired Gabrielle Giffords’ skull on Wednesday, the latest milestone in her recovery from an assassination attempt and a procedure that experts say will improve her quality of life. A gunman shot her in the head more than four months ago in Tucson, Ariz., and doctors had to remove a portion of her skull to relieve pressure on her brain. On Wednesday, they put a plastic implant in place to fully cover her brain, according to a statement from TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital. The hospital planned a briefing on Thursday to give an update on her medical condition and discuss the next steps in her rehabilitation. Read full article > >

NEW YORK — A representative for Mary Tyler Moore said Thursday that the veteran sitcom star has gone in to a facility for surgery to remove a benign tumor on the lining of her brain. Spokeswoman Alla Plotkin says Moore’s doctors recommended the elective procedure after monitoring the tumor “for years.” Plotkin would not specify if the surgery had already taken place, or how Moore was doing. The procedure was to remove a meningioma, a slow-growing tumor in the membranes that cover the brain. Meningiomas usually occur in older adults and are mostly benign. Read full article > >

Yesterday, a team of scientists funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen unveiled an interactive computerized atlas of the brain. “Until now, a definitive map of the human brain at this level of detail simply hasn’t existed,” Allan Jones, the chief executive of the Seattle-based Allen Institute for Brain Science, told the Wall Street Journal . “For the first time, we have generated a comprehensive map of the brain that includes the underlying biochemistry.” The complete atlas (the photograph above is of one thin slice of human brain tissue that was used in its construction) will be available for free at www.brain-map.org to be used as a resource for scientists. With more than 100 million data points, the existing atlas, which was built using two brains donated for research, is large — but not complete. The team at the Allen Institute will add eight more brains to the collection by the end of next year. View more Pictures of the Day . Image: Allen Institute for Brain Science.
