Asian markets fall as European ministers try to calm nerves

DUBLIN — Italian unions geared for a strike against planned budget cuts Tuesday, and a core group of European finance ministers were expected to confer in Berlin, as officials struggled to halt a slow-motion crisis that is slamming world stock markets. European exchanges opened mixed Tuesday, with neither large gains or losses, following a dramatic sell-off on Monday that pushed major indexes down more than 5 percent. Asian exchanges fell Tuesday, some by more than 2 percent. Japan’s Nikkei closed at its lowest point since April 2009 — falling 2.2 percent, to a level unseen since the previous global economic downturn. Other major Asian markets also sustained losses, with South Korea’s KOSPI dropping 1.1 percent and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 down 1.5 percent. Read full article > >

Gov. O’Malley says Maryland needs to be open to tax increases to address budget problems

OCEAN CITY, Md. — Gov. Martin O’Malley said Maryland must be open to new taxes to address the state’s budget problems next year, and he cautioned Saturday that the state must be prepared for serious ripple effects from potentially deep budget cuts by the federal government. O’Malley, who gave his annual speech to the summer conference of the Maryland Association of Counties in Ocean City, cited three primary shortfalls. The first is a state budget deficit of about $1 billion. He also said action is needed to maintain sewage treatment upgrades in the state. The governor also highlighted shortfalls in funding for transportation infrastructure. Read full article > >

Budget cuts proposed by House Republicans to the Food and Drug Administration would undermine the agency’s ability to carry out a historic food-safety law passed by Congress just five months ago, food safety advocates say. The legislation , passed in December, is the first major change to the nation’s food-safety laws since 1938. It calls for the FDA to significantly step up scrutiny of domestic and imported food and devise a new system aimed at preventing the kind of contamination that sickens one in six Americans every year.
