Hunt for Maryland’s Big One

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Records are sketchy on exactly when the height-measuring clinometer was invented. Some reports trace it back to Charles F. Marvin, an early 20th-century U.S. Weather Bureau chief who wanted a device to measure the altitude of clouds. It functions using basic principles of trigonometry: angles and tangents and X and Y, elegant mathematics encased in portable plastic, used to determine an essential question about the universe: How big is it? Sean Joyce brings intensity to No. 2 job at FBI

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

In the middle of the Pakistani night, near the border with Afghanistan, a team of FBI agents dressed in native garb descended on a hotel room. One of those agents, Sean M. Joyce, kicked in the door, tackled a screaming Pakistani man and threw him to the ground. The 1997 raid resulted in the capture of Mir Aimal Kasi , who was later executed for murdering two CIA employees outside the agency’s Langley headquarters. And it marked a milestone in the ascension of Joyce, who in September became the FBI’s deputy director, the bureau’s second-ranking job. Read full article > >

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

The new acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced a major shake-up of his agency Wednesday and urged Washington insiders to “calm down” about the latest revelations surrounding a controversial ATF gun operation. B. Todd Jones said calm is needed as he begins rebuilding the beleaguered agency, including shuffling top personnel . He made his comments as his boss, Attorney General Eric J. Holder Jr., came under fire this week from Republican lawmakers, with one calling for a special counsel to investigate Holder’s role in the Fast and Furious gun-trafficking operation . Romney’s too-good-to-check fact on Pentagon bloat

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

“While the output has declined, the bureaucracy at the DOD [Department of Defense] has increased. There is enormous waste. Let me give you an example that was reported to me by former secretary of the Navy John Lehman. During World War II we built 1,000 ships a year. And there were 1,000 people in the Bureau of Ships. That’s the purchasing department, if you will. In the 1980s we built 17 ships per year, and we had 4,000 people in purchasing. Today we build nine ships a year. Guess how many people are in purchasing? Twenty-five thousand people.” Read full article > >

Not at peace with building’s style

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Coming and going, there’s no escaping the work of Moshe Safdie. The Boston-based architect has two huge, expensive, in-your-face government office buildings in the District, and both sit at essential nodal points of city life. His headquarters for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, finished in 2008, dominates the intersection of Florida and New York Avenues in Northwest, putting a fortress-like facade to commuters along one of the busiest corridors of the city. And, now, there’s the U.S. Institute of Peace, the large, sandy-white building with the funny, glass canopy on top that sits opposite the Mall next to the Interstate 66 on-ramp. Obama seeks extension for Robert Mueller as FBI director

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

President Obama announced Thursday that he is seeking a two-year extension of Robert S. Mueller III’s term as FBI director, saying he cannot afford to lose the longtime FBI chief at a time of terrorist threats. The request for Congress to extend Mueller’s 10-year term comes as the White House had been searching for a candidate to succeed him. Mueller, 66, is facing mandatory retirement in September after a decade in which he oversaw the crackdown on terrorism following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, along with the bureau’s ongoing transformation into an intelligence-driven agency.
