CBS wins network ratings-war again; reality-competition shows still dominate

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

CBS can call itself the country’s most-watched network for the ninth time in the past 10 years. The network won the 2011-12 television season, which ended Wednesday, by averaging nearly 12 million viewers each week. That’s about 3 million more viewers than closest-competitor Fox, the largest margin of victory of any network in more than two decades. Read full article > >

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

MOSCOW — With Russia in a state of political ferment for the first time in more than a decade, a new poll has found sharply expressed and seemingly contradictory opinions holding sway. Russians strongly support specific characteristics of democracy, such as fair courts, a free press and honest elections — but don’t mention the word “democracy,” or support drops way off. ‘It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With The New Politics of Extremism’ by Thomas E. Mann and Norman…

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Reading this book is a little like quaffing a double espresso on an empty stomach — it’s a jolt. For this reader it was a welcome jolt. Others will find it less palatable. Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein have been Washington fixtures for three decades. They are two of the brightest, best informed and most scholarly students of our politics. They started out together as graduate students of political science at the University of Michigan, and decades ago took up residence at the Brookings Institution (Mann) and the American Enterprise Institute (Ornstein). Both have cultivated Democratic and Republican senators and House members to help them figure out the workings of the legislative branch. They acknowledge holding liberal views themselves, but throughout their careers they have tried to uphold a scholarly, non-partisan standard. Republicans once took them as seriously as Democrats did. The Democrats’ three-pronged plan for the ‘War on Women’

Friday, April 27th, 2012

After Hilary Rosen’s remarks about Ann Romney’s life as a homemaker, some thought Democrats might tread more cautiously in their attempt to paint the GOP as being anti-women. Nope. On Capitol Hill, Democrats are aggressively pushing the case that Republicans are now waging a “War on Women” on three legislative fronts. First, they are blasting House Republicans for their proposal to block changes to the Violence Against Women Act that would extend protection to battered women who are LGBT, immigrants or Native Americans who live on tribal lands. “We are seeing the sheer gender bias of their so-called ‘clean’ bill,” Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) said Friday. “They don’t want to sully their hands dealing with women in the shadows.” Read full article > >

TV review: ‘60 Minutes’ bids a too-fast farewell to tough ol’ Mike Wallace

Monday, April 16th, 2012

CBS’s “60 Minutes” spent its hour Sunday night doing the thing it had always dreaded but nevertheless was well prepared to do: sending off Mike Wallace. The clips had been chosen. The interviews had been done in advance; much of Sunday night’s material had appeared in 2006, when Wallace “retired.” The work of the legendarily tough 93-year-old correspondent, who died April 7 , will probably never be matched. The archival video evidence of his journalistic prowess will not be in short supply. Read full article > >

Editorial Board: Tolerating Ozzie Guillen’s intolerance

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

OZZIE GUILLEN has a gift for offensive remarks. In 2006, while manager of the Chicago White Sox, Mr. Guillen employed an anti- gay slur to refer to a local columnist; he issued an apology to the gay community — although not to the writer himself — and was ordered by Major League Baseball to take sensitivity training. He has trumpeted his penchant for getting drunk after away games. While criticizing harsh measures to crack down on illegal immigrants, Mr. Guillen opined that immigrants are “workaholics” and that many Americans are “lazy.” Read full article > >
