After a year-long effort to account for every grave at Arlington National Cemetery, Army officials said Thursday that there might be problems, some as minor as typographical errors in paper records, with nearly 65,000 sites — or one-quarter of the graves at the nation’s most prominent military burial ground. Small record-keeping errors might exist concerning tens of thousands of graves at Arlington National Cemetery, but a review of every plot has not found any additional cases of people being buried in the wrong places, cemetery officials said Friday. The grave-by-grave accounting of the country’s preeminent military burial ground was mandated by Congress last year after an Army investigation found widespread problems at the 150-year-old cemetery, including misidentified and misplaced remains, urns that had been unearthed and dumped in a dirt pile, and millions of dollars wasted on botched contracts. Once upon a time, it was the Day of the Dead, but now it is the days of the dead. A reverent, rural tradition of making picnics at the cemetery, of building a home altar of marigolds for the dearly departed? That continues. But like Halloween in the United States, Dia de los Muertes in Mexico has become a bit of a free-for-all, a five-day weekend with parties and drinking, a smash-up where dad dons a Spider Man costume and mom dresses up as a naughty French maid — to honor their ancestors, of course. It’s more pop, more pagan and more commercial. There’s even some trick or treating, which would have been unheard of a decade ago. Read full article > >
