Editorial Board: Tolerating Ozzie Guillen’s intolerance

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

OZZIE GUILLEN has a gift for offensive remarks. In 2006, while manager of the Chicago White Sox, Mr. Guillen employed an anti- gay slur to refer to a local columnist; he issued an apology to the gay community — although not to the writer himself — and was ordered by Major League Baseball to take sensitivity training. He has trumpeted his penchant for getting drunk after away games. While criticizing harsh measures to crack down on illegal immigrants, Mr. Guillen opined that immigrants are “workaholics” and that many Americans are “lazy.” Read full article > >

‘Mad Men’: A salute to this week’s five heroines

Monday, April 9th, 2012

In this week’s episode of “ Mad Men ,” no woman was safe. Certainly not those nurses who were so brutally murdered in Chicago by the very real Richard Speck . Not Joan, whose husband Greg finally came home long enough to announce that he was being redeployed to Vietnam and lie about the circumstances that prompted it. Not Megan, who, unbeknownst to her, is being cheated on in her husband’s weird, murderous fever dreams about Shelly Johnson from “Twin Peaks.” Not Sally Draper, who, as a young girl forced to eat tuna sandwiches in their entirety and curb her TV viewing habits (“I’m on vacation ”), is clearly the true victim here. Not even Cinder-friggin’-rella, who, based on the Michael Ginsberg version of her story, is a hobbling, helpless female stalked by a shadowy foot fetishist named Prince Charming. Which sounds kind of like the plot of “ Fifty Shades of Grey .” Read full article > >

Nationals opening day exemplified best and worst expectations

Friday, April 6th, 2012

CHICAGO — Brad Lidge did not expect to find himself on the mound for many ninth innings this season, certainly not on opening day at Wrigley Field. He signed with the Washington Nationals in late January with the understanding, despite his 223 career saves, that he would set up and provide a mentoring voice. “Give the guy a million dollars and let him look after the kids,” the 35-year-old said. National caramel corn day

Friday, April 6th, 2012

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Sweet, slightly salty and ultimately snacky – April 6 is National Caramel Corn Day ! As if yesterday's caramel celebration wasn't enough, the creative American spirit really shines in our homegrown confection of caramel corn. Popcorn has never tasted better than when its covered in a caramel candy syrup. Hot, sugary candy is mixed with popcorn and then allowed to cool. The end result is a sweet, chewy snack that will satisfy multiple cravings. You can also toss nuts into the mix for an extra crunch factor. A nostalgic favorite, caramel corn has been around since the 1890s. When Cracker Jack was introduced at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, people ate up the strong molasses flavor. It reminded them of, but wasn't entirely related to, kettle corn, a colonial predecessor. If Cracker Jack ain't your thing or you'd like to pop up some sweet corn, making your own caramel corn isn't difficult. Paula Deen's caramel corn recipe , which comes from her Grandma Paul, is great, whether you're making it for just a few friends or the whole gander. If caramel corn isn't enough for you, it is also National Hot Cross Bun Day . What a Good Friday indeed!

Capitals vs. Blackhawks: Washington comes up empty with 5-2 loss in Chicago

Monday, March 19th, 2012

CHICAGO — The Washington Capitals had everything to play for given their tenuous grasp on a playoff spot. They were plenty rested, too. Still, they came out flat Sunday at United Center, spotted the streaking Chicago Blackhawks a two-goal lead, committed too many turnovers and fell, 5-2, as their margin for error in the Eastern Conference playoff race continued to shrink. Young Americans less interested in the environment than previous generations

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

CHICAGO — They have a reputation for being environmentally minded do-gooders. But an academic analysis of surveys spanning more than 40 years has found that today’s young Americans are less interested in the environment and in conserving resources — and often less civic-minded overall — than their elders were when they were young. Wizards vs. Bulls: Derrick Rose leads Chicago past John Wall and Washington, 98-88

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

John Wall squared up against the player whose career he would most like to duplicate and did his best to trade him acrobatic layup for head-scratching layup. And for a half, Wall held his own against Derrick Rose , the reigning league’s most valuable player, unwilling to get upstaged on his home turf. Read full article > >

From Lear to Rothko, a director who wields a big brush

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Robert Falls was, to put it bluntly, tired of hearing himself talk. Decades in the rehearsal room had, in his mind, calcified his directorial style. The process worked well for him, of course, as he has spent 26 highly productive years as head of Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and along the way earned a Tony Award for his direction of the 1999 Broadway revival of “Death of a Salesman,” with Brian Dennehy as Willy Loman.
