Gov. Chris Christie made a broad stroke for diversity on New Jersey’s Supreme Court, many of whose decisions he has found objectionable.

There is a key bloc of Republican voters whose ambivalence has turned the GOP nomination contest into an erratic mix of roller-coaster ride and dating game. They flirted with Donald Trump and then embraced Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) before jumping on and off the Rick Perry bandwagon. At different times they yearned for Govs. Mitch Daniels of Indiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey and, always, some have cast a longing eye in the direction of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin . Sarah Palin has always played by her own rules in politics, but with the announcement Wednesday that she will not run for president in 2012, the former Alaska governor was for once bowing to the obvious. Palin had kept open the possibility of running until it was almost too late to start. By the time it came, Palin’s announcement was an anti-climax. The possible candidacy of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had generated far more interest and attention than musings about Palin. What a change for a politician whose every move or utterance has commanded maximum attention by the media. T he political world was shocked and dismayed to discover that Chris Christie is not running for president . Presumably this is because the New Jersey governor dropped so many hints about joining the race for the Republican nomination. Such as this one from last year: “ Short of suicide, I don’t really know what I’d have to do to convince you people that I’m not running. I’m not running!” Read full article > >

In a news conference, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told the country once and for all he’s not running. The announcement comes as a blow to donors, supporters and fellow pols who had pleaded with him to enter the race in the wake of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s stumbles. The decision will not endear him to party insiders and donors who fervently believed that this was his moment to run for the White House, and that his unique blend of plain-spoken rhetoric and commitment to systemic reform was just what his party and country requires. But those disappointed or even a little angry about the slow tease routine should remember that no matter how enthusiastic a pol’s supporters may be, they can’t force him to run. For months, one prominent Republican has been raising questions about whether New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has enough experience to make him ready to be president of the United States. As GOP voters await Christie’s decision on a 2012 bid for the White House, the critique is particularly poignant, given the Republican who has made it: Chris Christie. Read full article > >

Leading Republican strategists say that if he is serious about a presidential race in 2012, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is running out of time to build the kind of national campaign and fundraising organization he will need. But, they added, the tough-talking governor immediately would become a top-tier candidate with a real chance of winning the GOP nomination. Read full article > >
