Chris Christie’s biggest hurdle in weighing 2012 run: His own doubts

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

For months, one prominent Republican has been raising questions about whether New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has enough experience to make him ready to be president of the United States. As GOP voters await Christie’s decision on a 2012 bid for the White House, the critique is particularly poignant, given the Republican who has made it: Chris Christie. Read full article > >

For Chris Christie, a big opening but challenges await

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Leading Republican strategists say that if he is serious about a presidential race in 2012, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is running out of time to build the kind of national campaign and fundraising organization he will need. But, they added, the tough-talking governor immediately would become a top-tier candidate with a real chance of winning the GOP nomination. Read full article > >

Herman Cain: The GOP’s next big thing?

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Almost lost amid the buzz this week over the possibility that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may seek the Republican nomination for president was the potential rise of a candidate already in the race: Herman Cain. After a series of impressive debate performances and a new poll showing him in third place, he is the latest GOP candidate to ride the boom and bust, we-love-you-we-love-you-not cycle of this year’s volatile race . Paul Ryan for President? Probably not.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

The news that Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan is considering a run for president in 2012 threatens to further shake up an already volatile field on the Republican side — though most plugged-in GOP observers regard a bid by the Wisconsin Republican as very unlikely. The Weekly Standard’s Steve Hayes — a Fix friend — reported this morning that Ryan was debating the possibility of a bid and quoted a GOP source close to the Congressman saying that “he’s coming around” on the idea. And, last night former Bush White House political strategist Karl Rove told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity that Ryan as well as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were “going to take a look” at running in 2012 . Read full article > >

Take Rick Perry seriously. Ignore Chris Christie and Paul Ryan.

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

The latest shuffling of GOP presidential contenders has produced another round of signs that Republicans wish they had another candidate, in the form of renewed speculation about Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, and Rick Perry. I’d take the prospect of a Perry candidacy very seriously. Christie and Ryan — not so much. These types of rumors are basically a function of the way the process works.
