For the entirety of the Republican presidential race to date, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman has been a side story. Huntsman’s biography (he returned to run straight from a gig as the Obama Administration’s ambassador to China), his centrist stances on issues like climate change and his generally moderate tone all seemed to be a fundamental mismatch for a Republican Party seething with white-hot anger at President Obama . We always thought Newt should never, ever have cozied up on that love seat with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2008 to do that goofy climate change ad for Al Gore. And, indeed, it appears he’s still working hard to explain himself — about that and many other matters. We got an invitation the other day from legendary conservative fundraiser Richard Viguerie and veteran GOP strategist Diana Banister telling us that, “at the request of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich,” they had “arranged a private time for him to meet with a small group of conservative leaders and ask that you be part of the group.” Read full article > >

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, facing increased scrutiny as he solidifies his standing atop the Republican presidential field, sought to convince conservatives in a forum Saturday night that he would not stray from a limited-government philosophy. Asked why conservatives should trust that he won’t advance “big government approaches,” given his history of supporting an individual health-care mandate, climate change policies and a larger federal role in education policy, Gingrich said it was his years in Washington that made him best-suited to transform government. Negotiators wrapped up a meeting in Bali Friday without agreeing to rachet down the global use of ozone-depleting chemicals called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are a growing contributor to climate change. Officials from United States and the Federated States of Micronesia pushed for a phase-down in the use of HFCs , which are used as industrial refrigerants, as part of the 1987 Montreal Protocol agreement. HFC emissions are on the rise worldwide, in part because they serve as a substitute for ozone-depleting chemicals already eliminated under the pact. Read full article > >

The House Oversight Committee is expanding its probe of the Obama administration’s rules limiting greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks, according to a letter it sent to the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. The investigation led by committee chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) reflects the ongoing battle between House leaders and the administration over the extent to which EPA can address climate change without congressional input.
