Yes, the quake that struck the coast of Chile this morning was about 100 times stronger than the quake that devastated Port-au-Prince in early January. But initial reports put the death toll in the very low three digits–120 as I’m writing this. And while that number is certain to climb in the hours and days ahead, no one is expecting the calamitous destruction and loss of life that we’ve seen in Haiti, where 230,000 are already dead

A catastrophic earthquake struck Chile early this morning. The magnitude-8.8 quake spread as far as São Paolo, Brazil and was felt by 3-million people according to the US Geological Survey

LOS ANGELES — California warned its coastal cities to prepare for possible tsunami waves following a deadly magnitude-8.8 earthquake off the coast of Chile. A tsunami advisory was issued for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands. An advisory means there may be strong currents, but that widespread inundation is not expected to occur
