The Coast Guard and BP have returned to the scene of last year’s Deepwater Horizon disaster after a newspaper reported numerous oily blobs rising to the surface of the Gulf of Mexico a mile from the site. BP is sending a robotic submersible to examine the blown-out well that was cemented last August and declared dead a month later. An initial search turned up no sign of oil at the surface, and BP said in a statement late Thursday that there is no indication that its Macondo well is leaking. But the report by the Press-Register in Mobile, Ala., has incited a flurry of investigatory activity around the well, which blew out on April 20, 2010, in what became the worst oil spill in U.S. history . Coast Guard helicopters intercepted a small aircraft Monday as it entered restricted airspace near the Washington region, authorities said. It was the second interception of a small aircraft near restricted airspace in the area in three days. In the Monday incident, the HH-65 Dolphin helicopters under the direction of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted the civilian aircraft about 9 a.m. The helicopters made positive visual identification of the aircraft, which was permitted to continue to its destination, NORAD said in a statement. NEW LONDON, Conn. — Air Force One with President Barack Obama aboard made an aborted landing attempt at the Windsor Locks, Conn., airport Wednesday before trying again and landing safely, officials said. The White House and Federal Aviation Administration say it was a routine maneuver where the pilot was in the process of landing, but because of weather conditions decided to circle the runway before trying again and landing safely. The sky was heavily clouded in Connecticut, where the president traveled Wednesday to deliver the commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London. Read full article > >
