It was a night of death in Zanesville, Ohio on Tuesday. Faced with dangerous animals let loose by one of their owners, sheriff’s deputies shot and killed 48 exotic animals, including 18 rare Bengal tigers, 17 lions, six black bears, two grizzly bears, a baboon, a wolf and three mountain lions. It was a tally that devestated animal lovers, but for six of the animals, there is a happy ending. Three leopards, a bear and two monkeys were captured and taken to the Columbus Zoo. Coach Bruce Boudreau entered training camp watching and waiting for one of several hopefuls to assert himself in the race for the lone spot up for grabs on the Washington Capitals ’ roster. Through the first 11 days of the preseason, he’s still waiting for a front-runner to emerge. Monday night at Verizon Center, three of the four contenders for that position were in the lineup and played a key role in a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets , who dressed little of their NHL roster. The Washington Capitals entered Thursday night’s contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets with six healthy defensemen.
