TV review: On Comedy Central, ‘Jon Benjamin Has a Van,’ but not much else

Monday, June 13th, 2011

“Jon Benjamin Has a Van,” and indeed he does: a windowless blue number that is meant to conjure up images of creeps and perverts and other van owners meant to be generally avoided. With a garish paint job featuring Benjamin as a nude cherub with a reporter’s microphone, the van is ostensibly set loose with a mission to bring back humorous stories in this disappointingly unfunny series premiering Tuesday night on Comedy Central. This is the sort of show Comedy Central could actually use to complement its fake-news lineup. If Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert function as rough analogues to Walter Cronkite and Bill O’Reilly (and in fact have audiences that rely on them to filter the real news into something more ironically palatable), then what about a full-time Charles Kuralt on the road? The TV Column: Jon Stewart pulls a deft reversal with cutting Weiner satire

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Two days after getting nicked for pulling his punches when covering a news conference by pal Rep. Anthony Weiner, TV’s most influential fake newscaster, Jon Stewart, not only dived into the dirty deep end with the rest of the media — he made himself the star of the story. A million years ago — last week — Weiner (D-N.Y.) was denying that he sent a lewd photo of himself to a college-age woman on Twitter. He was suggesting his computer had been hacked, and he was insisting that he wasn’t sure whether the crotch in question belonged to him. On Comedy Central’s “ The Daily Show ,” Stewart mostly covered the story then by comically bemoaning how tough it all was, having to make comedy at the expense of a friend. Read full article > >

This is a linguistic hoot: Demetri Martin’s ‘This Is a Book’

Friday, May 20th, 2011

This is a Book Review. More precisely, this is a Book Review of “This Is a Book,” a work so wryly titled because comedian Demetri Martin mines the very nomenclature of things for askew humor, joyfully toying with the meanings and associations and sounds of words themselves. That is why he likes “boob.” This is a Defining Style. Martin will flash a few anatomical hahas — one must oblige one’s core Comedy Central demographic — but he likes “boob” mainly as a fast-punchline palindrome. Besides two-way spellings, he also trains his relentlessly inventive brain on acronyms and epigrams, graphs and rules of grammar, charts and doodle art. Language is his plaything — fodder to be prodded and poked and twisted till it yields bent-perspective laughs. Read full article > >
