Toyota Motor Corp. has subpoenaed Sean Kane, an auto safety advocate and outspoken critic of the company, asking that he hand over his communications with the media, Congress, government agencies and individual Toyota drivers inquiring about sudden unintended acceleration.

FCC deals serious blow to AT&T and T-Mobile deal

AT&T, with its powerful army of lobbyists and years of experience navigating Washington, thought it could easily persuade the government to approve its merger with T-Mobile. But regulators aren’t buying it, and the $39 billion deal is facing its biggest threat yet. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Gena­chow­ski dealt a serious blow to the merger Tuesday, moving to block the deal on the basis of findings that it would cause job losses and higher prices for consumers, officials said. Senate passes patent bill

After six years of squabbling over how to fix the country’s patent system, the Senate passed a bill Thursday touted by lawmakers as important for creating jobs and encouraging innovation. But a wide range of patent experts said that the bill had been so watered down after years of debate and lobbying that it will do little to repair the country’s dysfunctional patent system — and is unlikely to spur much job growth. “Every time I’ve heard either a Republican or Democrat talking about jobs relating to the patent bill, I feel like I’m in ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ” said Ed Black, president and chief executive of the Computer and Communications Industry Association. “Unless they’re counting patent lawyer jobs, it’s very unlikely.” Read full article > >

Verizon of Delaware Wins Court Order to Control Picketers

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) — Verizon of Delaware persuaded a judge to issue a preliminary injunction to prohibit striking union workers from disrupting business. Delaware Chancery Court Judge Leo Strine Jr. agreed with the unit of New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. that employees on picket lines in Newark, Dover and elsewhere shouldn’t be allowed to slow operations, block truck traffic, and commit acts of vandalism such as jamming vehicle locks with super glue, according to a court papers made public today.
