Sonny Rollins plays the Kennedy Center

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

One of the indelible images of Sonny Rollins’s career is of his practicing alone on the Williamsburg Bridge during his 1959-61 sabbatical from public performance. But the tenor saxophonist is no longer a solo act, even though he was billed as such for his show Monday evening at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. The onetime “ Saxophone Colossus ,” as a 1956 album title had it, has become a band leader, and has turned conserving his strength into a winning musical strategy. Read full article > >

‘A Melancholy Beauty’: Operatic Holocaust story has a happy ending

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Georgi Andreev’s oratorio “A Melancholy Beauty” relates that rare Holocaust story: one with a happy ending. It had its world premiere Tuesday at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in a compelling performance by the National Philharmonic and members of seven U.S. and Bulgarian choral ensembles under the baton of Henry H. Leck. The story relates the 1943 refusal of Bulgarian citizens, clergy and government leaders to allow Nazi deportation of the country’s Jewish population. As a result, all 49,000 Jews in Bulgaria were saved. Read full article > >

‘Glee’ concert at Verizon Center brings out the Gleeks

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

“Glee! Live! In Concert!” is as subtle a spectacle as its triple-exclamation-pointed title suggests. At Thursday night’s sold-out Verizon Center show, 14 actors, sans adult cast members, performed in character, alternately occupying the main stage and a smaller square island of a platform set in an ocean of audience. No song passed without a pyrotechnic display — as if, not content with the already impressive talents of the cast, the show’s producers felt the need to go over every moment of the concert with a highlighter. Almost everything about the production is a little bit ridiculous. Read full article > >

Midori performs at KenCen with Jonathan Biss, Nobuko Imai and Antoine Lederlin

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Renowned violinist Midori, a former stunning child prodigy, now in her late 30s, has diversified and lowered her concert profile somewhat. She earned a master’s in psychology from NYU, formed a music-education nonprofit, and is now chairman of the string department at USC’s Thornton School. Her concerts include a healthy mix of chamber music and community outreach events. On Wednesday evening at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater, Midori teamed up with pianist Jonathan Biss, violist Nobuko Imai and cellist Antoine Lederlin in a program of Haydn and Schubert trios, plus the Dvorak Quartet in E-flat.

Golden Globe Foreign-Language Nominees to Show at the Egyptian and Aero

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

With movie awards season in full swing, January’s the month to catch up on all the films that receive honorable nominations. It’s a little tricky, however, finding foreign films in theaters. These films are from abroad, but star some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Tilda Swinton (I Am Love), Javier Bardem (Biutiful), and up-and-comer Mikael Persbrandt (In A Better World) who’s set to star in 2012′s The Hobbit. The Edge and The Concert will also screen. The Egyptian Theatre will also host a nominees… Read More Read Comments
