Obama pardons 8 convicted of crimes ranging from importing marijuana to selling gator hides
Friday, May 20th, 2011WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Friday pardoned eight people convicted of crimes ranging from conspiring to import marijuana to selling alligator hides. The action marked the second set of pardons Obama has granted since becoming president. The first pardons, last December, went to nine people whose crimes included possessing drugs, counterfeiting and mutilating coins. Like the earlier pardons, the latest did not involve anyone well-known. The cases date back as far as 1975, when Randy Eugene Dyer of Burien, Wash., was sentenced to serve five years in prison in the conspiracy to import marijuana and two related crimes. Creeping sharia law becomes an issue in 2012 GOP primary
Tuesday, May 10th, 2011Politico reports on something that should already be common knowledge to readers of this blog — that the phantom menace of sharia law has become a “consensus issue” among Republican presidential contenders: The idea that American Muslims will somehow replace the Constitution with Taliban-style sharia law is a ludicrous conspiracy theory, which is why it’s so bizarre that it’s even become a political issue. State legislatures across the country have proposed or passed sharia law bans , which are patently unconstitutional given the First Amendment’s protections against government interference with religious worship. The only context in which sharia comes into play in the American legal system is in matters of civil arbitration and contracts — and there’s a longstanding American precedent for allowing the faithful to address such matters through religious arbitration if they so choose, but such agreements aren’t allowed to preempt civil law. Indeed, there’s growing alarm among Orthodox Jewish communities that anti-sharia legislation could ultimately interfere with their freedom to resolve matters through religious arbitration. Donald Trump (Birther-N.Y.) needs to get serious
Monday, April 4th, 2011MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell doesn’t think much of what Donald Trump is doing with all this birther stuff and his fake run for the 2012 Republican nomination for president. And neither do I. We said as much on O’Donnell’s show “The Last Word” on Friday night. In fact, I went a step further and did something I’d done once before when talking about the persistent and long-debunked conspiracy theory that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen: I showed his birth certificate on live television.

The Mainsteaming of 9/11 Truthism
Tuesday, March 1st, 2011Watch this snippet from The View — well, just watch the very beginning (I don’t want to punish you) — and listen to Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist and friend of Charlie Sheen, talks about the “takedown of building 7 in New York” (he mentions the “takedown” by way of exonerating Charlie Sheen of serious crimes). 9/11 conspiracy-mongers believe that World Trade Center building 7 was brought down by the American government (or by the Mossad, or Martians, or by Larry Silverstein, or possibly Homer Simpson). It is somewhat amazing that this view has now made it onto The View , and wasn’t even noticed, or challenged:

Randy Barnett on the Mandate
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011In his congressional testimony , he illustrates the difference between regulating activity and inactivity: Here’s a thought experiment. Imagine that I tell you 100 things that you may not do tomorrow. For example, you cannot run on a treadmill, eat broccoli, buy a car, and 97 other things. While your liberty would be restricted, there would still be an infinite number of things you may still do. Now suppose I tell you 100 things that you must do tomorrow. You must run on a treadmill, eat broccoli, buy a car, and 97 other things. These 100 mandates could potentially occupy all your time and consume all your financial resources. And also, of course, the difference between negative and positive rights.
