A top official of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation who was involved in the controversy over the group’s funding of Planned Parenthood resigned Tuesday. Karen Handel, vice president for public policy, acknowledged that she had supported Komen’s decision to pull funding for Planned Parenthood in a resignation letter obtained by The Atlanta Journal Constitution. However, she said the decision-making process began before she joined the organization last year, and the policy change was thoroughly vetted at every level within the organization and unanimously agreed to by the board at a November meeting. A federal judge denied a request Friday to add four presidential candidates to Virginia’s Republican primary ballot. U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney Jr. indicated he thought a provision requiring candidates to only use state residents to gather signatures was unconstitutional, but none of the candidates had collected the required 10,000 regardless. Updated 2:59 p.m. ET President Obama’s recent decision to issue recess appointments is constitutional, because recent pro-forma sessions by the U.S. Senate — some lasting just a few seconds — didn’t constitute legitimate sessions that could block such appointments, the Justice Department said in a legal memo released Thursday. I keep hearing that, as a headline on Salon.com put it, “ Rick Santorum is coming for your birth control .” And will there follow a bonfire of the barrier methods for this latter-day Savonarola ? In a phone interview Friday night, I asked the GOP presidential candidate about these reports. “That’s me! Eliminate it all!’’ he said facetiously. “In fact, I think I’ll introduce a constitutional amendment to ban it.’’ Read full article > >

Demonstrators crowded the Hungarian capital of Budapest Monday night to protest a new constitution they declared “anti-democratic.” Many demanded Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s resignation. Protesters gathered outside the State Opera, where the prime minister was attending a gala celebrating the new constitution, the Associated Press reported . The protesters, upset by a number of new changes in the constitution, chanted “Viktator,” merging the prime minister’s first name with “dictator,” the AP said. Read full article > >

When discussing his amazingness, Newt Gingrich sometimes exaggerates somewhat, as when, discussing Bosnia and Washington, D.C., street violence, he said, “People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz” [Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jan. 16, 1994]. What primarily stands between us and misrule, however, is the Constitution, buttressed by an independent judiciary. Read full article > >

The Justice Department on Thursday accused a controversial Arizona sheriff known for tough immigration enforcement of widespread discrimination against Hispanics, saying Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s department illegally detained Hispanic residents and denied them critical services in jail. Arpaio, the longtime sheriff in Maricopa County, oversaw a pattern of unconstitutional conduct that targeted Hispanics and retaliated against others who criticized the practices, the department said in an investigative report. The Supreme Court on Monday said it would review Arizona’s restrictive immigration law that sparked a national controversy and inspired similar state efforts across the country to crack down on illegal immigrants. The review will add to one of the court’s most high-profile caseloads in years, and probably will be heard around the same time as justices consider the constitutionality of President Obama’s health-care overhaul. The court on Friday said it also would intervene in a deeply partisan battle over Texas redistricting. Read full article > >
