2011 in economic policy: The year of the aftershocks

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Technically, the financial crisis began in late 2008, with the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. But 2009 was the year we really felt it. It was in 2009 that we lost more than 5 million jobs — the majority of the total job losses caused by the recession. By 2010, we seemed to turn the corner. The economy added more than a million jobs. Growth returned. The financial markets stabilized. Many forecasters looked to 2011 with real optimism. Read full article > >

Wizards vs. 76ers: In preseason opener, Washington unveils new uniforms but can’t hide struggles

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

John Wall and Andray Blatche trapped Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner in the corner at one point in the Washington Wizards ’ preseason opener Friday night, frantically waving their arms and bouncing around until Wall eventually corralled the ball. Wall took off on a full sprint, split two defenders, then spotted JaVale McGee out ahead. He tossed an underhand pass at an impossible angle that even the ultra-athletic McGee could not catch. McGee slapped at the ball and it hit off the backboard for a turnover. Read full article > >

For ice cream truck vendors, the mystery music works

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Just as he has done nearly every warm day for the past quarter-century, Mohamed Gardian Jalloh turned onto Denise Drive in Capitol Heights on Wednesday afternoon and flipped a switch. What emerged from the speaker on the roof of his white van was the instantly distinctive soundtrack of summer: ice cream truck music. Within 45 seconds, a door slammed, a mother shouted and a little boy in blue pants and a white shirt streaked to the corner. “Hey, Mohamed, can I get an ice cream sandwich?” the boy said breathlessly, thrusting a wad of dollars through the window in the side of the truck. Touring Chicago’s architecture by train and boat

Friday, May 27th, 2011

I’m on the “L,” Chicago’s elevated train, rumbling past building after building, 20 feet off the ground, when a little voice in my left ear says, “Okay, just before we turn the corner, be on the lookout for the third shell medallion from the end, and tell me what you see.” I’m on the lookout indeed, and as the train starts to hug the corner around the LeMoyne Building, I watch the lineup of ornaments on its exterior. And then I see it: The shell above one of the exterior pillars is upside-down. “Now you have to wonder,” the voice in my ear continues. “Did they not notice, or was it a joke for the train people? I’m going with a joke.” Read full article > >

Meaning in the Hidden Spaces: Q&A with Negar Ahkami

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Have you ever looked at one of those puzzle pictures? You know, in the old Highlights magazines that you would most likely read while you waited to receive your annual flu shot at the doctor’s office? The puzzle pictures are the “hidden pictures” in which everything looks normal at first sight, but you are challenged by the caption beneath the image to discover what aspect of the image is alien, which infinitesimal speck(s) on the page don’t belong. I used to sit idle in the corner of the waiting room, curled up atop a beanbag chair, searching for these hidden items, ignorant of time flying by.
