Ernie Els will return to U.S. Open at Congressional vastly changed by his child’s autism

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

They were, comparatively, kids then and not yet married when Ernie Els wrapped his girlfriend Liezl in an embrace 14 years ago after he won the U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club . The group hug included Els’s father Neels, who thwacked Ernie on the back on Father’s Day, though he missed his mark in the bedlam and ended up slapping Ernie’s mother, Hettie. No matter. Woods said he felt pain in his knee – originally injured on the 17th hole at last month’s Masters, the last tournament he played – on the opening tee shot, which he hit in the left rough, giving him a stance on pine straw. He slipped on the approach – “It obviously would have probably felt better if it would have held,” he said – and faced an awkward, uphill stance for his third shot beside the green.
