Friday’s front page carried a photograph marking the 30th anniversary of the crash of Air Florida’s flight 90 into the 14th Street Bridge.  The photo was taken using a high dynamic range. Russian investigators examine flight data recorders, say crashed plane’s engines were running

MOSCOW — All three engines on a Russian jet that slammed into a riverbank were operating up until the moment of the crash and the plane’s stabilizer and flaps were in a proper position for takeoff, Russian experts said Friday. Still, the Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee, which is conducting the crash probe, had no conclusions yet about the cause of the crash that killed 43 people, mostly members of a top Russian ice hockey team. The comments came as aviation experts examined flight data recorders from the crashed plane and began safety checks Friday on Yak-42 jets nationwide. Read full article > >

Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage, flamboyant professional wrestler, dies at 58

Randy Savage, a failed minor league baseball player who became the biceps-popping professional wrestler known as the “Macho Man” and the archrival of Hulk Hogan, died in a car crash May 20 near Tampa. He was 58. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Mr. Savage lost control of his Jeep Wrangler near his Tampa-area home and drove into a tree. His wife survived the crash with minor injuries.
