Kevin Durant might return to his home town as a most valuable player candidate on a team with the NBA’s best record, but he didn’t exactly begin his career in the best environment to succeed. Drafted second overall by a mediocre Seattle franchise that was rumored to be on the move, surrounded by players who weren’t focused on winning, Durant won just 20 games as a rookie. The Washington Wizards are off to their worst start in franchise history, and with each loss Coach Flip Saunders and his players find it harder to explain or excuse the struggles. They are the third-youngest team in the NBA, with an average age of 25.02, and eight players on the roster have less than three years of experience. But while youth and inexperience have contributed to Wizards’ 0-8 record, several scouts and league executives believe the problems run much deeper than the usual bumps that come from rebuilding. The Wizards, they argue, suffer from a lack of overall talent and a toxic culture of losing that has prohibited the growth of its developing players. Read full article > >

To no one’s surprise, Charlie Rose is no alarm clock, and “CBS This Morning,” the network’s umpteenth approach to the morning show format, is a gentle nudge. Lots of news in its first hour and remedial pop-culture chitchat, courtesy of Gayle King, in its second hour. And a third co-anchor, Erica Hill, bridging a gap labeled “etc.” Read full article > >

The complaint that Iowa is not a typical American state is true but trivial because there is no such state. Can you name one whose political culture, closely considered, is more like than unlike any other state’s? Anyway, someplace has to go first, and it should be somewhere the natives are receptive and media are not decisive, so marginal candidates have a sporting chance to become central.
