CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — When scholars gathered at Harvard last month to discuss the political tumult convulsing China’s ruling Communist Party, a demure female undergraduate with a direct stake in the outcome was listening intently from the top row of the lecture hall. She was the daughter of Xi Jinping, China’s vice president and heir apparent for the party’s top job. Read full article > >

After some (slightly serious) technical glitches, here at last are the bestseller lists for April 22 …. No surprise that Grisham’s latest (non-thriller) novel nabs the top spot in new fiction … while in nonfiction, the lovely Giada De Laurentiis is trumped by another thriller writer, Brad Meltzer, with yet another non-thriller entry — “Heroes for My Daughter” is the inspirational follow-up to his bestselling “Heroes for My Son.” Read full article > >

Finally embracing reality, Rick Santorum decided to take the easy way out rather than the hard way, leaving the GOP presidential race before a potentially humiliating loss in his home state. The race has been a foregone conclusion for weeks, but Santorum did indicate that the weekend and the illness of his daughter did cause he and his wife to reflect on the race and their responsibility as parents. In defeat he was humble and sincere, and in recapping the race he charted the improbable course of his campaign. For cynics, it was maybe the first speech of his next campaign, an option he leaves open by not fighting to the bitter end and by not making himself a pariah in the race. That he never mentioned Mitt Romney by name or offered congratulations is, well, sadly reflective of a smallness that he revealed from time to time. Read full article > >

Dick Franklin was reclining on a beach in Maui 13 years ago, reading a novel, when he heard a blood-curdling scream. His wife, D.A. Franklin, had been snorkeling with their daughter Missy, then just under 3, when the toddler suddenly gave chase to a beautiful fish as it headed out to sea. ¶ “She just took off, both fins just going like this,” Dick Franklin said, his hands imitating her splashes. “D.A., of course, can’t catch her. . . . Hence the scream.” ¶ Dick Franklin leaped out of his chair, threw his book into the sand and plunged into the surf to try to retrieve his daughter. ¶ “I caught her 35 feet out in the ocean,” he said, “in about 12 feet of water.” ¶ Said D.A., a casual swimmer: “That was it. I was done. I never snorkled with her again.” ¶ Almost since birth, Missy Franklin, now 16, possessed an unusual appetite and aptitude for moving through bodies of water. A junior honors student at Aurora’s Regis Jesuit High, Franklin owns a world record and five world championship medals and, with the London Olympicsapproaching, already draws frequent comparisons to Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian ever.
