Last year was the deadliest for civilians in the decade-long U.S.-led war in Afghanistan, according to a United Nations report released Saturday. Friday’s statement said the attack happened the day before in Homs province and it marked a dangerous escalation in the conflict. CAIRO — Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf is pledging an investigation of violence Sunday involving Coptic Christian demonstrators, the deadliest clashes in the country since the popular revolt that toppled the country’s autocratic leader in February. “The necessary measures are being taken now to immediately investigate the event and bring the perpetrators to justice, whoever they were,” Sharaf said in a statement posted on his Facebook page . Yemen forces open fire on protesters, 12 killed

SANAA, Yemen — Yemeni government forces opened fire with anti-aircraft guns and automatic weapons on tens of thousands of anti-government protesters in the capital pushing for ouster of longtime ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh, killing at least 12 and wounding dozens. The attack was the deadliest in months against protesters, who have been massing daily in Sanaa and other cities since February to demand Saleh’s removal. The protests have swelled the past week as the movement tries to renergize, angered by Saleh’s latest decision to deputize his president to negotiate a power-transfer deal. Pentagon releases names of Afghan crash dead

The Pentagon on Thursday released details of 30 men who died in Saturday’s helicopter crash in Afghanistan, providing the fullest picture yet of those lost to the deadliest day for U.S. forces in the Afghan war. The group included 17 Navy SEALs and five other personnel from a Navy Special Warfare unit, as well as five Army and three Air Force personnel. Military officials had previously said 22 SEALs were among the dead. Three of the men were Army reservists based near Gardner, Kan., where dozens gathered for a vigil last weekend.
