Israel ‘regrets’ Egyptian deaths, averting diplomatic crisis
Saturday, August 20th, 2011CAIRO — Egypt threatened briefly Saturday to recall its ambassador to Israel, prompting an expression of regret from the Israeli defense minister, two days after at least three Egyptian security personnel were killed by gunfire at the border after a deadly attack in southern Israel . The border killings, which have been blamed in Egypt on an Israeli helicopter tracking the attackers, have sparked a public outcry here and prompted calls by political parties and civic organizations for Egypt’s interim military leadership to respond and to reassess the 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
