At the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, General Motors unveiled "The Futurama" exhibit, a captivating model that displayed a vision for the not-so-distant "future" of 1960. Visitors to the exhibit, most of whom did not own cars, were left in awe of the “ideal city of tomorrow,” imagining themselves riding in a vehicle amidst breathtaking skyscrapers on concrete multi-lane highways, speeding toward a previously untouchable countryside with a sense of personal freedom. LOS ANGELES — Authorities say a Los Angeles police reserve officer has shot and killed his teenage son in self-defense during a confrontation in their home. The shooting was reported Thursday evening near Monrovia. The names of the officer and his son weren’t immediately released.

HARIDWAR, India — Thousands of Hindu holy men, some naked and smeared with ash, took dips in the chilly waters of the Ganges river while surrounded by cheering, dancing supporters Friday, one of the most auspicious days of a monthslong festival expected to attract more than 10 million people. Throughout the day, nearly 2 million devout Hindus – including large groups of sadhus, or holy men – are expected to bathe in the waters, which they consider sacred, said Anand Vardhan, the government official supervising the Kumbh Mela, often described as the world’s largest religious gathering.

At least one man in Florida had a worse Super Bowl than Peyton Manning. 42-year-old Vinh Pham of Key West attended a Super Bowl party at the house of Y Le in nearby Sugarloaf Key. In the early hours of Monday morning, Le decided to wrap up the festivities, but Pham didn’t want to leave.
